A glimmer, that was all Poseidon needed to see and he would be rich beyond his deepest desire. Then he could finally return home to his wife Amphitrite. Amphitrite was the goddess of the sea, one of the fifty daughters (the Nereids) of Nereus and Doris (the daughter of Oceanus) who was not very happy with him at the moment. He had kind of gotten their palace blown up in his most recent fight with Oceanus, Titan of the sea.
There it was! The little shine of light under the oyster shell was the answer to all of his troubles that would/could arise. The Necklace of Harmonia would give him the greatest wealth imaginable. There was a “but…” though and it was quite a large “but...” When the Necklace of Harmonia was worn it would slowly bring out the wearer’s inner demon, but surely it would not work on a god of his stature.
Poseidon scooped up the Necklace of Harmonia very carefully so as not to damage the fragile chain that held the large gemstone in place. The necklace was as beautiful as all the old stories had said. It was made of Celestial Bronze, the metal of the gods, with a large green gemstone pedant. It was a tear of Harmonia (the goddess of harmony and concord). The previous wearer of this necklace, before Hermes had stolen it and hid it from her as a practical joke, then lost it himself.
On his way back to his palace to tell Amphitrite his great new he thought he might as well start wearing it now, it wouldn’t hurt. So Poseidon tried the necklace on. Immediately he started to sense people looking at him in a different way than they usually did, instead of with awe and respect, they looked at him with worry and dread. The people knew what happened to people that wore the Necklace of Harmonia and they believed what Poseidon believed wouldn’t happen, it would work on a god.
At his palace Amphitrite came out to greet his return, but as soon as she saw the necklace around Poseidon’s neck she yelled “No! I will not have you in this house if you think that is the answer our problems! Take it off and throw it down the deepest cavern to Tartarus!” Poseidon started out of surprise of this sudden outburst, and then he kept walking and yelled back at his wife “I shall not! This will help us become the wealthiest couple of all the gods and goddesses! You are just jealous that I am the one who gets to wear it and I am the one who the treasure is drawn to!” Amphitrite realised that instant that the necklace had already started to take hold of her husband.
3 WEEKS LATER
Poseidon was lounging on his massive pile of treasure that had already filled the 1mile x 1mile lounge room, when one of the many new servants that he had hired, with his new massive amounts of money, entered. The servant complimented how he looked, and informed him that Amphitrite still hadn’t left her quarters, even after 3 weeks. Poseidon wasn’t surprised, Amphitrite wouldn’t even talk to him anymore. He also knew how he looked, he had become a large manta-ray so that he could cover and protect his mountain of treasure.
Knock Knock. Who could that be Poseidon wondered “Come in!” he yelled out to the person outside the door. In entered a couple of people who couldn’t be older than 17 years old “Hi your majesty, we were just wondering if the stories were true and you had become a big ugly manta-ray just to protect your treasure.” The taller of the two boys called out to him. They must have been some descendants of a sea god because they could move around freely and talk underwater. “EXCUSE ME! What did you just say to me?” Poseidon screamed furiously. The two kids didn’t look phased, the small boy just told him “I hope you realise that there is a big sword sticking in to your butt.”
Now that the boy had mentioned it he could feel the sharp point in his posterior. When he swung around to pull it out he didn’t see the 3rd kid, a girl, run in and scramble up to the roof of his lounge room. Poseidon swung back around asked the two boys “Do you two have anything else to add, because if you don’t then I suggest that you leave.” Poseidon stated bluntly. “Oh but we do,” the tall boy said “NOW JENNY!” the smaller boy screamed. The girl who had climbed up to the roof suddenly jumped down and landed on Poseidon’s back and grabbed hold of the Necklace of Harmonia and pulled with all of her might until it snapped and she fell back onto the mountain of treasure which disappeared under her as they watched it. Poseidon’s features shifted as he morphed back into his human form again and lay on the floor gasping for air. “Whoa! What happened to me?” Poseidon exclaimed. “Thank you so much guys I could see out of my eyes but I could not control anything.” “You’re welcome Poseidon, Amphitrite called us in to try and save you.” Jenny said. “Ok thank you again I think that I owe Amphitrite a massive apology and breakfast in bed for a month or something.”
