Prologue
As we stood around the watering whole, I watched all of their eyes on me. Hoping. Silently begging me.
The eyes of the people that had become my family.
I knew that if I didn’t drink the water…I was dead. They would come after me, and the Greenwood’s…they’ve protected me too much already. I couldn’t ask that of them again.
It sounded so easy. Just one drink, and it was over.
My life as a mortal would be over.
Ever lasting life. It sounded so great, didn’t it? Not to me. It sounded like death in a whole other form. Watching everybody around me die, except for the others…while we stayed young and healthy forever. Where was the fairness in that?
So it all came down to this one moment.
The moment where I would choose to live my life as a normal eighteen year old…or live forever.
The faces around me smiled, and I tried to smile back. I loved all of them, they were the closest thing I’ve ever had to a family, and I couldn’t bare the thought of leaving them. But then there was Percy, and Haley…and Gran.
How could I choose between my two families…the two groups of people that meant everything to me?
I took a deep breath, and closed my eyes, breathing in the air that was still cold, but held the warmth that meant spring was coming. Standing in the woods, breathing in the fresh air and snow, I looked around me once again.
And when my eyes found his, every one else seemed to disappear. It was only us standing there.
And in that moment, looking into his beautiful eyes…I had made my choice.
