Andy
Matt picked me up an hour later in his car, and I didn’t even ask how he knew where I was because I already knew the answer. He tried to make normal conversation but I just wasn’t in the mood. I just felt drained, and I needed to be by myself.
“So…” Matt spoke again, breaking the silence. I turned my head from staring out the window and looked at him.
“Yeah?” I asked.
He looked at me, and then back at the road. I saw his muscles clench as he gripped the steering wheel harder. “My dad said that, uh…that you could either stay with us, at the house for a while, or…”
“Or what?”
He grinned. “Or one of us could stay with you at your house. Your pick.”
I hit my head off the headrest. “Ugh! Why can’t my life just go back to being normal,” I complained.
He laughed, and shrugged. “Hey, you’re not alone you know. We’re here to help.”
I looked over at him, and his blonde hair hung over his forehead in a perfect way that made his bright green eyes stand out. I’d always wanted eyes like that.
“Yeah, I know. It’s just hard coming to terms with, ya know?”
“Yeah, I understand. I was born into this life. I guess I’ve never know anything different.”
I’ve never really thought about how the Greenwood’s feel about living this kind of life. Never aging. What does somebody do with forever? I just couldn’t wrap my mind around any of this. It was so surreal.
I kicked my shoes off and hugged my legs to my chest. “But you were human once, right? You said you drank the water at twenty.”
He stared straight ahead, and a muscle in his jaw clenched. He sighed. “Yes, I was human once. I still am, I guess,” he laughed. “I just can’t die.”
“What made you wait until you were twenty to change? Was it forced on you? Or were you willing?”
He raised his eyebrows, looked at me and laughed. Well, sorry I have a lot of questions.
“I didn’t wait until I was twenty. Okay, I did, but it wasn’t exactly my choice. It wasn’t forced on me, but it kind of chooses you I guess you could say. You just know when your ready,” he looked and realized I didn’t understand. “It’s hard to understand,” he chuckled.
I bit my lip, and brushed my hair back from my face. “Yeah, I guess.”
After a few minutes of comfortable silence, a thought popped into my head. “So, since we both know my grandmother is never going to let a boy stay at my house, and there is no way in hell the redhead is, I guess I’ll have to stay with you guys,” I paused, then added,” And the only reason I’m agreeing to this is because I know I don’t have a choice.”
He grinned. “It’s better that way, anyways. We can look out for you more. And your right,” he winked. “You don’t have a choice.”
I rolled my eyes. “I don’t need protecting. I can take care of myself. Really.”
He stuck his arm out the window. “Mhm. I’m sure you can.”
“But can we stop into my Gran’s house? I need clothes and stuff.”
“I’m already one step ahead of you.”
I hadn’t been looking around us, but five seconds later we pulled into Gran’s driveway.
