The Sea's Savior

The seas were dark and freezing as Kai swiftly swam down into the abyss she had been taking shelter in. She lived in the dark in fear of being discovered so she found the deepest darkest hole and remained there. Praying every day to Poseidon to give her the strength she needed to help her find her family.
     Kai was a young and beautiful mermaid but had been scorned her entire life for many believed she was an abomination, her mother had been a siren which were outcasts in their society. While her father had been a mermaid. Sirens were known to have darkness within them, whether it's small and deep within them or they are completely evil and murderous. They were even known to have magical abilities but it is rare. Her mother was innocent and could no longer live with her mother who forced to commit evil acts, so she ran away. While her mother was on her own she ran into Kai's father who was entranced by her. He took her back to Atlantis and helped her assimilate into society but they never assimilated to her. They would either talk behind her back or were afraid of her but that didn't stop them from being in love. They eventually married and got pregnant with Kai. They were the happiest they had ever been and no one was going to take that away from them.
    When growing up Kai was bullied on by the other young mermaids for her dark skin and black tail. Everyone else had beautiful colorful tails with light skin. So Kai grew conscious of herself, never seeing how truly beautiful she was. They bullied her because they feared her, they feared the power and darkness that she had within her. Kai was only 18 when the king first discovered the truth about mermaids, only a couple months later was when the hunting began.
    Kai laid in a small cave completely covered in darkness, she felt safe hidden away from anything that could hurt her. She felt comfort in the darkness. As she began to drift asleep the horrific nightmares began to creep in. Every night Kai would dream about the day her family was taken away from her. They had been swimming for miles on their way to their mother's old home, a place they could take shelter in. Kai grew tired and stopped swimming trying to get some rest but while her family continued to swim forward a giant net crashed on top of them, her brother, mother, and father flailed as they tried to get themselves untied from the net, Kai hurridly swam up to them trying to lift the net off of them but it was too difficult, they had become trapped. Her mother gave up and looked at Kai with fear in her eyes, she gently caressed Kai's face and whispered to her a goodbye. The net began to rise as the men pulled them towards the surface, all Kai could do was watch in fear and scream for help but no one was coming to save them. They finally grew out of sight and she was utterly alone, she didn't think she could feel so much pain but it only grew worse because the water around her began to change and she was suddenly surrounded by a faint cloud of blood. She screamed in horror for one of her family members was dead and she didn't know who.
    Kai woke up panting, trying to regain her breath. Almost every night she woke up from the same dream and every night she swears on Poseidon that she will do anything to find her family again. From that day she had spent weeks in search of them, not really knowing where she was going but just hoping she could find them.    
    Kai swam out of her little cave and towards the surface. she began to slowly rise above the surface and only keeping her eyes above the water line but that was a mistake because before she knew it there was a net surrounding her. Her body filled with adrenaline and fear as she tried to get the net off of her, she tried swimming away but the net was too heavy for her small body to push. the net began to pull her up above the surface. The cold air touched her skin causing her body to react causing goosebumps, it was the first time she had ever gotten them but she was too focused the loud voices of the men pulling her up. She had never been completely out of the water, she didn't know what would happen, would she die? The net kept rising and as she looked up she could see big frightening men looking down on her. She finally reached the top and was dropped on the wooden floor, she lay there shivering and covering her face on the floor for she feared to look up and see her captors. She finally decided to look up and what she saw in front of her was not what she was expecting, she saw a young handsome man crouching near her, he had dark eyes which complimented his black thick hair with a matching full beard. He looked at her with curiosity for he had never seen a mermaid before. When his eyes met hers he was stunned by bright teal eyes that stood out against her long black hair and dark complexion.
    As she laid there something to began to change and she began to feel weird. Her body began to change, her once noticeable gills began to close and disappear into her neck. She reached for her neck and felt her gills were gone, she roamed her neck in panic in search of them, hoping maybe they would appear suddenly. Then she looked down at her tail, the one that she had hated all her life and it slowly began to fade away and what appeared shocked her the most. As her tail diminished a pair of legs appeared in their place.           
    All the men around her looked at her in shock, they have never known a mermaid who can form into a human. Kai looked up at all the men and they had surrounded her which invoked fear into her, she was alone and exposed to the wild men who had kidnapped her. She didn't know what to do, if they wanted to kill her they would have done by now, so she sat there waiting for fate to take over.
