“Jeremy Davis?” Ms. Douglas called from her desk in across from the classroom’s door. Jeremy and Hayley entered just in time. “Present.” He responded, rushing to his seat next to Kathryn. Unfortunately for him, he had to detour to one of the first row seats since the mystery boy had taken it. Only Hayley heard him mutter ‘fuck’ under his breath. Ms. Douglas’ youthful green eyes regarded her behind her old lady glasses. With a quick display of a peace sign, she took her seat next to Jeremy. Kathryn and the new kid were right behind them.
Ms. Douglas continued with the roll call and after a few names she mentioned, “Alexander Turner?” Considering that everyone at this school knew everyone, it was normal for the class heads to go towards the only new face in the room. Jeremy and Hayley sighed.
“’ere, and it’s just Alex, m’am.”
“Alright, Alex.” Ms. Douglas annunciated. Hayley could see her best friend rubbing his temples from the corner of her eye and offered him a sympathetic look. She was able to give most of her attention to comforting Jeremy since she knew she was always dead last when they took attendance. If there was a kid with an last name that started with an X,Y, or Z she’d love to know how their ancestors could saddle them with their names.
Ms. Douglas said her name without looking up from the roster, “Hayley Williams?”
“Present and punctual.” She retorted. Since Ms. Douglas was one of the younger teachers, she took Hayley’s joke at face value and smirked. “Okay class, you may notice that we have a new exchange student today. I know Kathryn’s been showing him around, but I want to give him a proper welcome. Alex would you mind standing up for the class?”
“I would m’am.”
The entire class shifted uncomfortably in their seats. “…What?’ Hayley was beyond irritated at this point. It was one thing to be ‘too cool for school’, but if this kid couldn’t recognize that one of the best teachers at the school was trying to be polite he was trying too hard to be a prick. Kathryn turned around and gave him a stern look. This time he had the brains to move out of his seat. He basically strolled to front of the class, the eyes of the students burning into the back of his head. Alex puckered his lips.
“I’m Alex Turner,” he took the toothpick out of his mouth and rolled it between his fingers, “from Sheffield, England.”
Ms. Douglas stood up from her desk, “Good… Now, you’ve joined us pretty late in the year so you’ll have to catch up. We’re in the middle of completing our group projects.”
“Cool,” He said looking down at his hands, “Katy filled me in some. I liked Chem lessons at school so I’ll work on the case study.”
“Is there anything else that you like, Mr. Turner?” She asked.
Alex shrugged putting his toothpick back in place, “Music. I play guita’.” Then proceeded to look at the first row where Hayley and Jeremy were sitting. Strangely enough, he looked into her eyes before looking at her hair. He wasn’t pretending to be chill, either. He actually looked for her to engage in eye contact with him, and that was something not many people she knew did. Since she started dying her hair crazy colours, her parents had begun to look at her hair before their daughters eyes. He wasn’t special or anything, of course…Just interesting.
Ms. Douglas nodded and addressed the class, “Is there anyone in here that is interested in doing the case study with Alex?”
Hayley saw the gears turn in her best friend’s head the minute their teacher asked. If she was stuck with the new kid, he could have a chance to join Kathryn’s group since her group was doing the flame test analysis. Jeremy began to raise his hand, but Hayley karate chopped it hard against the desk. He seethed, “Dude!”
She looked at him and whispered, “I am not letting you throw me under the bus.” When Hayley’s eyes looked back up at the new kid, he seemed to look a bit deflated. Kathryn’s voice had cut in soon enough, offering to let him take refuge in her group. For the rest of the class, Hayley felt like she had just gotten off a roller coaster. All of a sudden she was hyper aware of the silly greaser boy. Even though her eyes had been pried off him as he walked back to the table, she was pretty sure his eyes on her. Well, at least that’s what it felt like. There was no way she was turning around to check.
It was the ringing of a school bell that lifted the curtain of confusion from her eyes. Her next class, the Choir elective, was on the other side of the building. “Have a nice day, Ms. Douglas!” She said as she sped walked out. “And Jeremy, you can say how sorry you are, for nearly betraying me, at lunch.” The culprit buried his hands in his hair and gave her thumbs up as he walked the opposite direction. Still walking, she reached for the concealed IPod in her jacket pocket.
“Oi, Speedy Gonzalez!”
Fuck. My. Life.
Her polite nature won out and she managed to turn her head, “Yup.”
Hayley kept walking in an attempt to shake him off, but he just kept with her pace which was not very much of a feat since he was a two heads taller than her. The chains that decorated his boots jingled as he began walking backwards to face her. “You’ll run into someone walking like that.” She muttered.
“You’ll find I’m light on me feet,” He extended his hand, “Alex Turner.”
She blinked. He was being seriously…forward? In her confusion, she slowly returned the gesture and simply said, “Hayley.” His hands were calloused. Probably from the guitar playing. He looked dangerous and cool. A typical bad boy. There was a child like light in his eyes, though. It threw Hayley off and she didn’t like that one bit.
“What class are you off to?” He asked.
“Choir. Where are you supposed to be?”
Alex smiled in such a way that the toothpick in his mouth jutted out, “Guita’ with Mr. Juanes. So we’re in the same wing. You sing a lot?”
“Yeah, I do actually, “Hayley sharply turned the corner, “In a band. I work hard every single day.”
Alex nearly tripped and brought a smirk to Hayley’s face. She knew he didn’t have an excuse to walk with her now that they were next to Mr. Juanes’ room. "Laterz, Alex."
