Take this pink ribbon of my eyes,

I’m exposed and it’s no big surprise,

“Just a Girl” by No Doubt was probably one of the top 10 most played songs in Hayley Williams IPod. Maybe top 5. After parking her Corolla in the student lot, Stefani’s sassy vocals gave her the much needed adrenaline spike she needed to not drag her feet to the concrete buildings laid out across campus like dominos. On the brightside, her locker wasn’t as far from her parking spot as it could have been. She wrapped her jean jacket around the neon yellow crop top, which matched her boots, ready to tackle the school system.

Hayley had gone to New Franklin Public School since she’d moved here for 8th grade. After the parents’ divorce it was a tough transition, but she was lucky enough to find some quality people there. Now in her Junior year of high school, only one of three boys she had met in her first year were still close to her. Jeremy Davis was a treasure. He stood, no he practically perched by her locker every morning since she’d know him and today was no different. “Hayley!” He wrapped her in a hug, “How was the Winter break?”

She chuckled, “Highlights were Christmas with your folks and my sisters ganging up on me during the New Year’s Eve party at Monopoly. Needless to say, I lost and it still stings.” Her dark blue manicured nails grabbed for her lock and spun the combination in.

Jeremy clapped for his friend, “Aw, good to hear they’re not being oppressed then! I’m loving how your dye job turned out, by the way. It was more purple-y when you came over, but it’s really evened out.” He mussed her cyan blue pixie cut. She crinkled her nose in fake frustration. Hayley tried to make herself look as scarily angry as possible, only to earn her a fit of laughter from Jeremy. She hit is arm, their usual banter, but he didn’t respond. His eyes were glued over her shoulder, towards the building’s metal doors.

By the way Jeremy gaped; Hayley assumed it must have Kathryn Camsey, the resident foreign beauty of their high school. Kathryn has appeared in their lives midway through Freshman year and Jeremy had been hopelessly in love with the English girl ever since. It was just this year, however, that she actually knew that he existed. Hayley wouldn’t have even turned around if it weren’t for the sound of a deep unfamiliar accent hitting her ears. There were some mumbled formalities exchanged between Kathryn and what looked like a greaser straight out of the 50s. He swaggered next to the prim Kathryn with a confidence that bordered arrogance. If the attitude wasn’t obvious in his step the shiny gelled quif atop his head, leather boots, and tooth pick under his tongue were dead giveaways. One thing was for sure, these halls had never seen someone quite like him before. Jeremy waved meekly at Kathryn, who smiled before returning her attention to the new student. “You have to be kidding me.” He said knocking his forehead against Hayley’s locker.

She sighed, “Woah, Davis, come on you have no idea-”

“Did you see him, Hayley?! Like actually see him?” He gestured to the hallway where he imagined his dreams of being with Kathryn had died, “If looks could kill he’d be a switchblade!”

“Pretty inefficient way to kill someone, honestly…You’re a bomb.” Hayley patted his shoulder. He looked down to his shorter friend with a forced smile. “Come on, man, chin up! You and I have a date with Chemistry. Did you get the conversion factors together? You know how I hate math.”

He nodded as she closed her locker and began heading to the classroom, “Boy, do I know it. They were pretty easy. Hey, I know you wanted to make up a case study but can we just stick with flame demonstrations Ms. Douglas did in class? I just think it would be easier.” Her cheery expression faltered.

“Um, okay, whatever.” It wasn’t. Jeremy noticed her apprehension, but decided to keep his mouth shut. They’d talk about it later. The ringing of the first bell started the rat race to classes as the halls movements became rushed. The two best friends took it as their cue to sprint to class.

“Davis, I have tiny legs, slow down!”
