CHAPTER ONE
Ever since I was little I have always had a dream to accomplish things other people have never been close to solving.
My dream is to travel out side of the fence that is isolating my city, Vilnius, from the rest of the United States, if there is anything left.
Long ago we were isolated from the rest of America for an unknown reason, only the small amount of Others know why it happened and why it was hidden to everyone in the country.
The citizens of Vilnius call everyone outside of the fence Others, because there is nothing else we can think to call them.
We all can easily leave the city and discover for themselves what happened, but after the first person who left was found dead outside of the city gates, so nobody has dared to leave or even step a foot near the gate since the horrifying tragedy.
Superstitious people believe that God or the gods that want us to stay here and when it is our time to leave we will be sent a message.
I believe that we were put here for a reason, the reason could have been something as simple as nobody wanting to move here anymore or it could be something deadly.
Who would want to keep thousands of innocent civilians alone in an isolated city with supplies that are quickly becoming more scarce?
Every month our food supply is quickly running out, and as we are becoming more frantic to grow more crops, but as a devastating drought starts to strangle the city, it’s starting to seem more hopeless to a new, safe beginning.
Each year the population has rapidly decreased to an unsafe low, which may be the last existing humans of the species.
There is something I can do, something that will most likely get me killed, but it’s worth it.
On my sixteenth birthday I’m going to leave everything I have ever known and go outside the gate, gathering my life savings and any scraps of food I can carry, taking my best friend with me.
The opportunity for a new beginning for her and her peers are quickly starting to draw to an end; without any answers to what will happen next.
From now on I’m going to think about what will happen and what I will know. There is no time to afford thinking negative.
I can't give up finding the Others, I won't give up, I will never give up.
