"Here you go Em."
My mom handed me a watermelon slice. I immediately started picking out the seeds because those didn't taste good. My mom looked over as I was doing so and giggled.
"Emily, did you know that if you swallow a watermelon seed, it grows inside you?"
"No way!"
I was astonished at the idea of a watermelon being able to grow inside someone.
"Is that what happened to all the ladies that have really big bellies mommy?"
It was a serious question but my mom only laughed at my question. I saw my daddy walking in our direction and I ran to him.
"Daddy, is it true that if you swallow a watermelon seed... a whole watermelon grows inside your tummy?"
I felt my eyes widen as I asked.
"Oh my, yes! watermelon seeds are dangerous" he whispered.
I took that second opinion as confirmation and settled with that idea. I had never thought about that but I guess it made sense at the time. My family and I were having a picnic at a park near our house and spent the whole day there. By the end of the day I had already forgotten the whole 'watermelon seed' theory.
