I slam the sliding door open as everyone in our group stands up and walks towards me eagerly." You got it or what? " My uncle Carlos askes. I nod my head. " Drop the bag, will ya? " He says . I take off my backpack, drop it and kick it over to him as I take my gun out of my back pocket and drop it; as well as slide it over to his feet. Uncle Carlos picks up my black backpack and opens it. Cash goes flying out and falls on the floor. " No one saw you, right? " He asks. " I shake my head respectfully. " No... Sir. " I say lying. Uncle Carlos walks towards me slowly. " Y' lying to me? " He asks livid. I gulp and say: " No, Sir. No one saw me. " 'What about the cops? " He asks as his steps grew faster and his tone grew higher. " I lost them. " I said as I held my hands behind my back and my head held up high.
Uncle Carlos pushes me down on the hard and ice cold concrete. I left myself up; balancing on my elbows. Uncle Carlos snatches my bag as he walks into a separate room. The crowd of my "family" disappears. Everyone scatters into their own cliques. The druggies move over to their small corner with the large crack in the wall. The prostitutes all gather near the "gangsters" who are counting cash and are rolling up weed in bible pages. The robbers all round up in our storage room. I walk over to my brother, Joseph. His hair is black, and curly. He has darker skin than me. He has long eyelashes and dark brown pupils. He is wearing dad's old patterned button up shirt; As well as ripped jeans that are so big you can see his large bruises that spark his skin and a large cut on his upper knee from when he tripped when running from the cops. He barely got away and almost reveled our hideout.
" joseph- " before I can finish my sentence, he runs up to me, and hugs me. " Joseph, come here, you can't hug me in front of everyone. " I say. He nods and takes my hand as we walk outside behind the ragged and cracked adobe building. As we reach the back of the adobe building, he hugs me. I hug him back as I squeeze his old and dirty shirt. " What took you so long? " He asks. " Sorry, I had to loose them' cops. They were right behind me. " I say as pull apart from him and rub his cheek. He has grown so big. I can't believe that we've been here for ten years already. Joseph is already twenty one. He was so young back then; I was too.
No matter how much we want to leave, and be with our parents, we can't. We can never escape.
