The girl ties up her hair, a self-satisfied smirk on her face. "Come on, P'Sol," she says. "It's the twenty-third century. You and I both know I can make you my wife."
"In your dreams!" the older girl replies, a couple strands of her hair blowing in her face as the wind picks up. She crosses her arms furiously, allowing the basketball to bounce completely past her when Kip tosses it her way.
"It's just a game of basketball," Kip whines, running past her to go get the ball that's rolled into the street. "Who's to say I'm going to win, anyway? You've always been better at me in this, anyway."
"I just think it's stupid," Sol replies, shoving her hair out of her face. "Don't you?"
"Do you not want to be my wife?" Kip asks, moving to go stand by her once again. "Would you rather be my husband?"
Sol rolls her eyes, arms crossing over her chest once again. "It's the twenty-third century," she mocks. "You and I both know that the terms of both 'wife' and 'husband' existing within a same-sex relationship are heteronormative ideals that were left behind two centuries ago!"
"So technical," Kip states, shifting the ball to rest on her hip, her other hand coming up to rub over her heart. "Fine, then, we'll both be each other's wife."
"Fairer," Sol agrees, nodding, and so Kip throws the ball to her again, but, like before, she lets it go right by her. Kip groans and runs after it. "But I'm still not doing it."
"Please, P'Sol," Kip complains. "I'll do anything you want for a day."
Sol doesn't respond.
"A week?"
Still nothing.
"A month?"
Sol holds her hands out. Kip tosses her the ball. "Now we're talking," Sol says, immediately zipping past Kip and shooting a three-pointer.
;
"Does this count as acting as a wife?" Kip asks as she sets down a cup of pink milk in front of Sol, who shrugs as she lifts the drink and takes a sip. "Housewife? I never thought I'd enjoy it."
"Shut up," Sol says. "We don't live together, and you've never went to my house to vacuum my floors. Mom would love it, though. If you were to ever ask her for her blessing, especially after vacuuming her house, she would definitely agree." At Kip's look, she's quick to point an accusatory finger. "Don't get any ideas, though! Keep in mind we're still in high school." She glares at the other girl as she drinks her pink milk.
Kip leans back in her chair with a smirk, drinking her iced coffee. "Fine," she says when she's done, "but as soon as we're off to university...."
"I just said don't get any ideas," Sol snaps. "Who's to say we're even going to the same university, jeez."
"I say," Kip says, but Sol just rolls her eyes.
"You don't even like engineering."
"Maybe not," Kip agrees, "but I like you."
"Don't be stupid, Kip." Sol takes a sip of her drink. "Don't base your future off of some stupid girl."
"Hey," Kip says, suddenly serious as she leans forward to grab Sol's hand, the one resting by itself on the table, "don't say that about yourself. Either way, it's my choice, isn't it?"
Sol doesn't look at her as Kip waits for a reply. When it's clear Sol doesn't plan on saying anything, Kip sighs. "Sol," she says, and Sol looks up, startled by the lack of an honorific. "Yes, I want to go into Economics, but there's always postgrad. I'll do it, then. Besides," she adds, a charming smile making its way onto her face and filling Sol's cheeks with a familiar heat, "I've found, especially after all those tutoring sessions with you, that I like," Sol meets her eyes, heart fluttering in her chest, "engineering."
