"Hey Alec!"
"Hey, dude,"
"Hi!"
People greet and wave at me, I reply to them all with a smile, despite not knowing or recognising each one. A lot of people know me, I guess, I'm captain of the basketball team, and we're one of the best teams around.
I continue down the hallway to my locker, where I see my friend, Lucas, putting his second bag inside his own, right next to mine. I finally catch up to him, and hug him briefly.
"Alec, how have you been?"
"I'm good, mate,"
"Damn, you spend 1 month in England and your accent is stronger than ever," he jokes. Lucas closes his locker and proceeds to lean on it. I punch his shoulder in a friendly manner.
"You know proper well that it'll fade," I say back, "Give it one week."
He hums in response, taking out his phone and tapping away at it.
"How about Serena?" he asks cautiously, not looking up from his phone.
I groan and slam my locker shut. "Haven't talked to her since 4th of July,"
Serena is my girlfriend.
Was my girlfriend.
Frankly I don't know anymore, we fight and break up a lot more these days. The last one we had was at the start of summer, on Independence Day. She went ahead and threw a huge party in her backyard, inviting the whole school. I couldn't go because I already had something more important planned, and she knew that.
She knew I had plans, she knew that I wasn't going to abandon them for some common party, yet she still gave me the cold shoulder.
We finished earlier than I expected, fortunately, and I still showed up to the party, hours after it started. I did feel bad, for completely dismissing how she might've been feeling.
Until I found her sitting on another guy's lap, arms around his shoulders while he kisses her neck.
I stood there frozen as my heart slowly shrivelled up and stopped beating, shocked that she would do something like this, that she could just forget I existed. I stayed there for two whole minutes, just to be sure that it was her, and that she was going to jump off him any second.
She never did.
I immediately left and left her a message, telling her I went to her bloody party in the end, but it looked like you were having more fun without me. I blocked her number after that, and ignored any attempt she made to contact me through social media. I haven't heard from her since.
"Forget her, Lucas. I'm tired of the constant back and forth." I say harshly, trying to change the subject. Lucas laughs under his breath, and that's when I really take a look at him, he hasn't taken his eyes off his phone in a while and has a giddy smile on his face. I slowly look over his shoulder to see his phone and find his text chat open.
