Bones

There's always a time when kids dream about driving. This is not that time I was hoping for.

It was dark, cold, and raining outside. My sister and I were scared, having nowhere to go but drive. So slowly, I made my way down this what seemed to be an endless mountain. The only thing that could actually make my sister and I scared right now, are the things swarming the sky at a rapid rate. These things were like fairies but not pretty or sweet. Instead they had bat like faces, two sharp teeth in the very front of their mouths, ripped skin for wings, overgrown nails, dirty leathery skin, and the voice of something unnatural.

The only thing they followed to find their prey is light or sound. So, driving in the dark, we made our way down the mountain slowly, hiding under trees just to be safe. The road was a straight stretch down, so we didn't really need to see where we were going. Suddenly, the radio turned on, blasting "Bones" by Eric Church. We panicked, screaming as we pressed random buttons in attempt to turn off the terrifying sound.

Finally succeeding, I hit the breaks, looking around at our surroundings, but I couldn't see anything but black, which confused me because there are street lamps everywhere. Pushing the power button on my phone, I shown the small light at my side window. I was alarmed to see these nightmarish beings covering the vehicle, attempting to break in. Hissing all at once, they created an ear piercing shriek, disorienting my sister and I.

Turning the key over, I hit the gas, speeding off the road down the mountain side. Surprisingly enough, we didn't hit a single tree until we reached the bottom, and the only damage that we received from the side collision, was a partially broken window and a few scrapes and bruises.

I looked up at the over head window, trying to see where the creatures had gone. It was at that moment I realized that the collision must have pissed them off, because at that moment, a swarm of the bats from hell were flying straight towards our vehicle. "We've got to get out of here." Mahayla says calmly in a panic. I turn the key, attempting to start it up, nothing. I retry this multiple times, my sister repeatedly saying the same line, faster and more panicked every time she said it. After my sixth try, I punched the dash, and turned the key again, hearing the satisfying sound of it starting up. I switch the gear into drive and step on the floor petals, nearly getting missed by the swarm as they collided with the tree and a small abandoned building.

The radio suddenly turns back on, somehow playing the same song, and my sister starts panicking again. After a few seconds of bones playing loudly, we look to our side to see one of the demons trying to get in through the broken part of the window, the glass tearing at the flesh on its torso.

Mahayla makes haste as she takes her shoe off and hits the creature hard with it, eliciting a loud scream of pain as it flew out the window onto the pavement behind us. We look at each other with a small smile and relieved laughs, as my eyes turn back to the road, the vehicle makes contact with a wall. And then I wake up.
