Everyone's quiet while they sip their tea and coffee and eat their cookies. Tyler sits especially close to me on Alana's couch and Marshal sits on the loveseat alone while Tara and Alana sit at the kitchen table talking.
"I'm gonna go see what's taking Jacob so long," Alana says as she stands up and walks down a tiny hallway. I look over at Tyler and he looks down at me, rubbing his palms on his pants. I grab his wrist and pull his hand into mine. He smiles and then looks down at our hands.
"Come on. Just come see him for a second." We all hear Alana's voice again and our heads snap up.
"No. He doesn't want to see me." We hear a guys voice and he sounds freshly like Marshal.
"Yes, he does." Alana sounds like she's kind of begging. "You can't sit in here all day and play games with Pacer."
"I can and I will." He sounds like he's getting a bit frustrated. Then Pacer hobbles in. He stops at the end of the hallway and looks around the room at us. "Where'd Pacer go?"
He finally decides to plop down on the floor at the end of the hallway. "See, even Pacer thinks you should go out and see him," Alana says.
She walks back out, stepping over Pacer like she's stepped over him a million times before. She walks to Tara and wraps an arm around her. She pushes her face into Tara's neck and I can see Tara's smile.
"Fucking lesbians." I turn my head. A guy looking just like Marshal stands next to Pacer, crouched down and rubbing the dog's ear. He scans the room quickly with dark brown eyes and then locks his sight to Marshal.
"Jacob." Marshal stands up abruptly.
"Marshal..." Jacob lengthens it out as he rises out of his perch.
They walk slowly to each other. They both put their hands in their pockets and when they reach each other they look damn near identical.
"Wow," Tyler whispers.
"Shhh!" Tara whisper yells.
Jacob and Marshal both turn around to look at us. Everyone quiets down and then they look back at each other. "Nothing like having a crowd around to witness you and your brother reunite," Jacob says as he rolls his eyes.
"They're my friends, jackass," Marshal says, crossing his arms.
"I can't even tell who's talking anymore," Tara says.
"Fucking lesbians," Jacob and Marshal both whisper it under their breath simultaneously and then they look up at each other.
"Can we go get wasted now?" I hear Alana sarcastically ask.
"Alana, you have never said a smarter thing," Jacob says as he walks back down the hallway. Marshal turns around and looks at me. I shrug and lean closer to Tyler.
Jacob comes back, putting something in his pockets and walking toward the door. He stops and turns to look at all of us. "Yes? No? Wasted?"
"Wasted." We all stand up and walk out the door after him.
"Stay good, Pacer," Alana calls out before she shuts the door.
We all pile into different cars and Alana and Jacob lead us to a bar. It looks pretty nice from outside. It's kind of full for it being 5 in the afternoon. "Why are there so many people here?" Tara asks.
"Ah... The ancient Japanese art of karaoke," Jacob answers.
"Karaoke?" Tara asks. I can feel her uneven thoughts about this. We've never really been in LA and we still haven't really been out to karaoke together. Mainly just us alone in my apartment singing and dancing around in our underwear playing Rock Band or Just Dance on the Wii.
