There are a lot of reasons why a person could dissociate. Its different for everybody, but some causes/triggers include:
Past/childhood Trauma
Past trauma (child abuse, sexual assault, car accident, etc) is the most common reason people dissociate because dissociation is a defence mechanism. Your brain is trying to escape the trauma.Other underlying illnesses
Most of the time, dissociation is a symptom of another disorder (depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, PTSD, etc) that hasn't been addressed, or is being ignored. Try to get treatment for the underlying illness to help the dissociation!Less common causes include:
-a bad drug experience
-self harming too much
-lack of sleep
-minor accidents (breaking a limb, etc)
-laughing gas
-some people get triggered by certain medications (specifically minocycline. You should also avoid weed, caffeine, and alcohol, as those are also known triggers.
