The group was done for the day. Pete kept talking to Andy about Patrick's stomach, they both found it adorable. Patrick mostly just kicked his feet back and forth on the chair. Joe sat back and just listened to Leah.
"Have a good week everyone!" Leah said opening the door. Joe walked Patrick out along with Ruby. She was as happy as could be. "Next time I see you you'll be having a baby in the matter of weeks! We're goin' talk about it okay?" Leah says to Patrick.
"Okay.." he said. Joe pushed him forwards. "I still need a ride home. Brendon is still at the dealership."
Joe nodded and held ruby close. The lobby was packed like always. No sign of Patrick's grandma. "Why can't you grandma pick you up anymore. I'm not saying I don't want to take you places, I enjoy helping you out." They were at Joe's truck. Joe was getting ruby into her car seat. After he helped Patrick get into the truck.
"She's busy with work." He said. "I can't work only she can-"
"Patrick you know she retired. Bren and I work at the same place as her." Joe said. Patrick blushed. "For real, what's wrong with her?"
Patrick bit his lip and tapped his foot. "She's getting really sick and it's bad. She can still help me out but she's always at doctor appointments and the hospital. She has some sort of cancer and that's all I know."
"I'm sorry," Joe says. "I know how that feels. My mom died of cancer a few years ago." Joe says offering his hand for Patrick. Patrick looks at it and the road. He takes it and holds his hand. Joe pulls out of the parking spot and drives with one hand.
(OKAY PEOPLE WHO CAN DRIVE WITH ONE HAND ARE TALENTED!)
"Patrick, I care about you okay? If you need anything please let me know. I have a good job at the company I work at and I work at home so if you need anythi-""Joe I'm fine. I won't need anything." Patrick says looking at his friend. Patrick's feelings for joe are very confusing, he doesn't understand it. He's never felt this way about anyone.
Joe held his hand the entire way to Patrick's place. "Thank you for the ride. I'll text you later." Patrick softly got out of the truck and walked up to the house. His grandmother was waiting there for him. "Hi."
"Patrick we need to talk, sit down." She said. Patrick sat down next to her. She took his hands. She told him the news. Tears streamed down his face.
"No," he shook his head. "Yo-you can't! I need you, Grandma pl-" he begged.
"Patrick there's nothing they can do about it. I have less than two weeks apparently." She said. She coughed into her rag. "I love you, you know that?" Patrick nodded. "I have to start making the Will okay. It's not your fault it's the doctors fault for not catching it."
That night Patrick laid in his bed. He rubbed his stomach and thought about everything. He was sad about his grandmother, he was angry at the doctors. He was afraid of the next two weeks. He missed joe and ruby. His phone went off.
Joe: hey do you want to get some tea tomorrow?
Patrick texted back okay and sat his phone down. He got up to check on his grandma, she was asleep in her bed. Good he thought.
