My mouth felt like it was stuffed with cotton balls and my throat was so dry. I coughed and fluttered my eyes open. It was too bright. Way too bright. I groaned. Where was I?
"Hey, sunshine..."
I focused my gaze and there she was. There was Joey. Her hair was up now instead of down and she looked like she had been crying. Her eyes were rimmed in red and all trace of makeup had been wiped away. She traded in the black dress for ratty sweats and an oversized sweater. It's funny. She looked more beautiful now then she did at Michael's party.
"Where am I?" I asked, slowly sitting up.
Joey looked down and pulled the sleeves of her sweater over her hands. She shrugged and slowly made her way towards me. She sat beside me but, never met my gaze. She was way too quiet. Did I do something wrong?
"Of course you did something wrong, Luke."
"You always do something wrong."
"Uh you're in my room." She shrugged. She said it like it was nothing. Like it was okay that I was in her room and that it was no big deal.
She folded her legs underneath her and tugged her sweater down to meet her feet. It was black and way too big against her tiny and petite frame. The sweats were worn and stained with paint. She sniffled.
"What happened, Joey?" I asked, almost afraid I would scare her away.
She let out a shaky breath. She wouldn't stop moving her hands. A nervous habit I noticed. "Michael hit you. You were out for a good five minutes at the most."
Five minutes? It was only five minutes? How on earth had all of that happened and I had only been out for five minutes? It had really only been a dream?
I shook my head and groaned. This had to be worse than any hangover I had ever experienced. And by any hangover, I meant the two times I have ever gotten drunk in my life. My head was throbbing.
"I'm so sorry, Luke," Joey whispered, her voice quavering.
I looked at her and saw the tears begin to pool in her eyes. She rubbed her hand against them, sniffling and turning away. She was crying for me. Oh, Joey. Why would you ever cry for me? Was I that important to you? Of course I was. Of course I was that important to you. I would always be that important to you.
"What's wrong?" I asked, hoping it wasn't something that I did.
"Why do you automatically assume I'm crying because of you?" Joey laughs. But, there's not a trace of humor in her voice. "I'm not upset because of you, Luke."
I frowned. Then why was she upset? Wasn't she upset because we left the party? It was because people were talking about us and we had to leave, wasn't it? That had to be it. She wasn't upset because of the Michael thing... Right?
"Luke, you are such an idiot..."
"It's obviously because of you."
"He hit you because of me." Joey whispered.
I shook my head. Oh, Joey. You stupid girl.
"I kissed you. He had every right to hit me. You do technically still have a boyfriend,"
And that was when I realized that I had said the wrong thing. But, how was I supposed to know? Or was it known to everyone but, me?
"Michael and I broke up two days ago." She spit. Her words were laced with venom. Joey shook her head and let out a harsh breath. "I broke up with him because I couldn't be with someone I didn't have feelings for."
