Phosphophyllite was dropped into the water due to the cracked ice caused by Antarcticite. They didn't notice until they turned their head and didn't see Phos at all, until they saw the ice and the hole that could only represent a gem falling through.
Phos was slowly drifting into the freezing water. Would they be stuck there? Just as their eyes opened, however, the opening where they fell began to close up. Guessing it was confirmed. They were definitely going to be stuck underwater until they break apart.
Antarcticite's eyes widened out of their pure shock, starting to make a run for the opening. It slowly had begun its closure. They didn't think they would make it in time without their weapon, so they quickly brought the blade out of its holster and sliced an opening of their own in the ice.

They were d e t e r m i n e d to get Phosphophyllite back, whether they risked their own life of both of them. It was all or nothing at this point in time.
