A couple hours pass as I get items we needed in my backpack; I packed an extra flashlight, screwdrivers, a crowbar. What? Who knows if we need it and it was a hassle to get without being caught. After I finished my necessary packing, I went to the house a bit before the agreed time. I grew curious about the house just as much but I had a bit more courage than Emma did. Hopefully, 10 minutes would be enough time for me to venture alone. I go to the broken 6-foot gate to enter the backyard. I knocked on the wood fence on and surrounding the gate door to see if termites have gotten to it. They have. I crept into the backyard of the house to see a garden area that has become wild. Vines have grown outrageous and now looks like a bunch of tangled hair. Decayed flowers and herbs flooded the unkempt ground. Beside the garden was a wheelbarrow partially filled with dirt. I didn't pay that much mind. What did catch my eye was a small well. Stones and a bag of cement behind it indicated that it was handmade and I applaud whoever built it. It was a basic well but I'm assuming Mother Nature wanted to add her little touches and decorated it with vines. My head swiftly turned to the attention of a small portion of tangled vines. I was hesitant but curious, so I slowly went over. As I went to move the portion of the withered plant, my phone rings. I cursed in fright. My eyes widened at the time; it was 8:08. I ventured too long but all I did was look at dead plants and observed the craftsmanship of a well.
I answered the phone with a whisper; it was Nicole. "Uh, hey." My heart was beating fast as I walked out of the backyard. Nicole sighed, " Where are you? We are out front." She wasn't wrong because I saw them. I hung up as I approached them. I ended up getting his on the back of the head by Nicole for hanging up abruptly. Emma walks barely walks in before looking at me. My heart skipped a beat even if her look was stern. "Mark, you didn't lock the door?" Nicole crossed her arms and my eyes widened slightly. I must have forgotten to lock it." Nicole tsked at me, " Idiot. We could have been caught." She ended the scolding and followed Emma inside. I go inside the house after and locked the door this time. Emma's scared expression had dissolved to a now more determined look. I wasn't sure what the look was for. I wanted to ask her but then I remembered a few hours earlier that they mentioned our ancestors doing witchcraft inside this house. Did she want them to be right or to be wrong? I looked over at Nicole, who gave me a cold look. I knitted my eyebrows in confusion, " What? Found something?" She rolled her eyes at me. " Yeah, I found a dope who was impatient and explored without us." I shrugged. I wasn't going to make a big deal over nothing. I walk into the next room that happens to be a gathering room. A couch was disguised as a ghost costume on a budget. I examine the cloth and the dust that's gathered on it. Against the wall, there was a bookshelf. It looked like a large chunk was missing from the collection.
Spaces were between books and some book spines and pages littered the red carpet before the wooden bookcase. Emma follows me into the room a bit later. She wanders by the other side of the room where there's a blocked off fireplace. On the mantle, there were pictures in frames but the glass was dirty on the inside for us to see. Nicole came in the room a couple minutes later with the flashlight out. She shined it on the pictures and sucked her teeth. "We already know what they look like, Nikki," Emma said. Nicole flickers her flashlight on and off as she thinks as if it were a fail attempt at morse code. I quickly snatched the flashlight out of her hand and shut it off. We all looked at it and froze. It looked like we all played freeze tag and the person that was "it" left. We stood there in utter stillness and quiet. A bead of sweat trickled near my left ear. Did someone see? Are we going to be caught? Or worse, jail time? All questions yet to be answered. A twig snapped outside the window where Nicole was standing. She yelped before covering her own mouth with her hands. Normal circumstances, I'd laugh when she would be scared but this isn't a normal circumstance. Emma gestures her to duck, which she did, and we followed her action. Minutes passed by as we remained in the position we were, crouched and unseen from the sight through the window. Nicole slowly rises and I rise after her. Nicole looked at her and insisted Emma stood as well but Emma was hesitant. After we managed for the frightened Emma to stand we headed for the foyer of the house. Nicole and I wanted to continue to search the witchy house while Emma wasn't as thrilled. "I told you it was a bad idea. No, you both assumed I was-" Her words were interrupted by the attempted turn of the locked front door. Nicole's jokingly grin turned into a frown and Emma's peachy colored skin turned into a sickly white within an instant. All I can think about is that we were screwed.
Hey, SamToledo13 here. I'm sorry it's been SOO long for me to update a new chapter. A lot of things were going on and I had to update and fix the last few chapters as well. I'm going to try and update more often, as often as I possibly can. I'm going to try and aim for next week unless something comes up. Thank you for reading!
