"Are you sure you can't hold him longer? Or at least send him somewhere else?" I pleaded with the officer at the front desk of the psychiatric prison that my dad was in. He was to be released in a week and as being sent to stay with my mother and I.

"I'm sorry hon but he's due to be released. He's much better if you'd like to see him," The woman smiled.

"No," Devon and I said in unison as he came up behind me and held onto my elbow to steady me. I didn't notice I was shaking uncontrollably.

"He's mentally ill and he killed his son," Devon glared, "and you're gonna let him live with his daughter he tried to kill too?"

"He's recovered," The woman said tightly, Devon's comment obviously making her nervous.

"Bullsh-," I began but Devon gave me a sideways look and I shut my mouth.

"Please, at least just send him somewhere else?" Devon asked the officer.

"I'm sorry but he has to stay with family. You're his last living blood relative," The woman sighed.

"I know that," I growled, "There used to be two of us."

Something flickered in the woman's eye. Whether it was pity or irritation, I didn't know. A soon as it was gone, she straightened up and hardened her voice. "I'm sorry but there's nothing I can do."

I dropped my head onto Devon's shoulder with a defeated sigh and he patted my arm awkwardly.

"Thanks anyway," Devon sighed to the woman.

"Wish there was something I could do kid. I know you're worried about your girlfriend," She frowned.

I bristled but I didn't protest and Devon just smiled and led me out of the building. We hopped into his car and I leaned back in my seat and closed my eyes, a feeling of utter defeat washing over me. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I opened one eye to look over at Devon. He gave me one of his famous contagious grins and I couldn't help but smile back at him.

"You could always just stay with me," Devon offered.

"Who would take care of my mom then? She doesn't care about me but that doesn't mean I don't care if my dad goes psycho and kills her," I sighed.

"What if he relapses when he sees you? You're mother won't be able to protect you," He frowned.

"You'll be with me then? I don't want to do this alone," I said lightly.

"I'm with you," He smiled, "every step of the way."

When I just snorted at his comment, he smirked at me and shrugged. "What? That's what boyfriends are for right?"

"One," I laughed, "They are for buying food with. And two, since when are you my boyfriend huh?'

"Since twenty minutes ago of course," He smirked.

"Oh. Thanks for the update. I must have missed the part where you asked," I snorted.

"You can't resist me anyway," He grinned.

"I won't deny the truth," I smirked.

"Don't taunt me," Devon groaned.

"Why not?" I asked, smirking.

"Because now I really want to kiss you," He sighed.

"And why don't you?" I asked lightly, my heart fluttering.

"Because you're gonna be late to your job interview and if I kiss you, I won't be able to stop," He said matter-of-factly.

"Then you better drive because I'm free afterwards," I laughed evilly.
