Sideeqah's POV
I run as fast as my legs can carry me out of the emergency ward. When I get out, I try to slow down so I won't draw attention to myself. I stop by a door and try to breathe normally again."Excuse me! I've never seen you here before," a nurse stops me.
"Um, yeah! Am new here. I got transferred," I lie.
"From where?" she asks.
"I have to go now. My shift's over."
I hurry out of the hospital. I see some policemen outside and I duck behind some flower hedges. They are talking with each other and one of them picks his walkied talkie and listens. He signals to the rest and they all run into the hospital.
I don't need someone to tell me that it's me they are looking for. I have to get out of this hospital as fast as possible. I don't want to go to jail. But how do I escape? I look around and spot a pink bicycle resting on a pole. That will do. I have no time to waste. I race to the bicycle and quickly got on it.
As I ride through the hospital gate, the security man gives me a bored look before returning back to his newspaper. I ride out as fast I can. I haven't gotten far before I hear the police sirens. Shit! I have to hurry but this stupid bicycle isn't fast enough. I ditch the bicycle and run into a nearby bush.
I have no idea where am going to. I just know that I have to escape from here. I can hear the police dogs barking fiercely behind me. My feet is beginning to hurt from the running. These shoes ain't running shoes. But I can't stop now. If I do, these dogs will catch me. The last thing I want is to be bitten by a dog right now. I cringe inwardly as I think of it.
I can see the river just ahead of me. I just have to run past a few more trees. Those dogs won't follow me into the river. I'll be able to swim to the other side. It will take an hour or two for the police to get to the other side of the river and that will give me enough time to escape.
Almost there, Sideeqah, almost there.
That is when I feel it. The sound and then the pain.
The pain is so intense. I have never been shot before. I can't handle the pain so I fall to the ground and scream. But shouts of, "She's down. Suspect is down!" gives me inspiration to get up.Almost there, Sideeqah. Don't give up now. I am close to the river now. Just a few more steps and I will be in. My eyes are trying to close but I force them open. Not now. Now is not the time for a nap. I jump into the river and almost wish I didn't. The is so cold and it bites into my skin especially my left arm where I have been shot.
I look behind me and see that the dogs have stopped. The police men have stopped too and are yelling for me to get out of there. Of course they know the water is freezing that's why none of them try to jump in and pull me back. I ignore them and try to use my arms but my left arm is useless right now. So I just let the waves push me farther and farther away from the police.
I am gradually slipping into darkness. I can't feel my legs at all. Tears roll down my face as I fight to stay awake. But I can't help it. My body seems to relax when I close my eyes so I give in to the pull. I close my eyes and welcome the sweet darkness.
