SHE BARELY REMEMBERS WALKING into the house. She barely remembers hearing Victor yelling at her for being late. She barely remembers Patricia and Joy aiding her up the stairs.
She wishes she could forget tonight.
"What happened?" Joy asks, her heart breaking at the sight of her best in such a state. Marissa didn't answer, her head clouded with fragments of the night.
He did it.
Tears were rolling down her face. Patricia and Joy shared a look, not knowing how to comfort their friend without making her feel bad.
"You can talk to us," Patricia said, sitting on the bed next to Marissa, her voice soft. "We're here for you." Her tears came harder, yet she made no sound, no sign she even heard her friend speaking.
He did it.
Patricia turned to Joy, a look of desperation on her face. 'What do we do?' She mouthed. Joy shrugged in response, biting her lip.
"Come on, Marissa, what happened?" However, that didn't help the situation. Marissa's breathing became fast, shallow. Her shoulders shaking, her sobs hysteric. Even a fool could realize she was having a panic attack.
"He did it," the girl finally croaked our after a few more moments of silent despair. "You guys were right." Marissa inhaled deeply before moving her head up to meet her friends's gaze. "He did it."
-
Marissa promptly passed out after those words were said, exhausted by the night's turn of events. Patricia and Joy both agreed to investigate the next morning. They had a feeling they would need all the energy they could get.
When they woke up, they were surprised to see Marissa out of bed and actually getting dressed for the day.
"You alright, Mar?" Patricia asks slowly, coming up to stand next to her friend in the closet. Marissa was shifting through the rack, probably trying to find her white blouse required for uniform. Patricia's words startled her.
"Yeah, I guess so," the girl replied, taking the hanger off the rack.
"Do you want to talk about last night?" Joy asks. Marissa sighs, and quickly finished getting dressed. "You had us worried."
Marissa looked at her two friends from the vanity mirror. "I know, and I'm sorry about that. I really am. I just..." she trailed off, not knowing how to finish her sentence.
"You told us 'he did it' and that's it." Patricia said.
"That's what I thought," Marissa mumbled quietly to herself, hoping her friend's wouldn't hear her even though they did. "I promise I'll explain everything, just, not now, okay?" She says. Not waiting for a response, Marissa all but runs out of her bedroom, quickly scooping up her backpack as she goes.
