"Fernkit," Applebark mewed softly nudging the small kits side, "its time to eat. Get up before Shallowkit eats the whole pigeon."
Fernkit blinked her eyes open with a yawn. She hadn't gotten much sleep after her nightmare.
She stood and stretched, coughing slightly as she padded towards the gray bird.
"Hi Fernkit! Are you feeling better today?" Shallowkit asked kindly in between bites.
"Hi. I think I might feel a bit better," Fernkit mewed.
Fernkit still had a small cold from her swim in the river the day she had been abandoned two moons ago.
"That's good," Shallowkit mewed, his mouth full.
Fernkit swallowed a bite, "eat with your mouth closed silly!" She giggled.
Applebark purred while the two kits ate the pigeon.
After the kits had finished all they could of the pigeon Applebark ate the remains.
"I'm supposed to become an aprentice soon!" Shallowkit mewed excitedly.
Shallowkit had been born half a moon before Fernkit but always viewed Fernkit as his true Litter mate despite the small age difference.
"I'm sure you'll be the best warrior!" Fernkit mewed happily. She knew Shallowkit was going to work hard. She also knew she would miss him for the half moon they would be apart.
"Hey kits of mine!" Shadestorm mewed as he padded into the den.
"Shadestorm!" Shallowkit and Fernkit chorused.
The two kits scrambled to the black tom.
Shadestorm always considered Fernkit as his own even though she wasn't.
"We tried a pigeon today!" Shallowkit mewed.
"I think it was my favorite fresh kill so far!" Fernkit squealed.
Shadestorm laughed, "well I'm glad you both liked it," he mewed.
He padded over to Applebark and licked her cheek.
"I'll be going on border patrol soon," Shadestorm mewed, "I'll visit when the patrol is over.
"Will you teach us a new fighting move!?" Shallowkit mewed excitedly.
"We've still got work to do on your crouch and pounce but I'll consider it," Shadestorm mewed.
"Yay!" Fernkit and Shallowkit squealed.
"We're going to be the best apprentices in the den!" Fernkit bounced a little.
"Yeah! Maybe we can convince Juniperpaw and Yarrowpaw to help us out too!" Shallowkit suggested.
"Oh! That would be amazing!" Fernkit mewed.
Applebark laughed, "well you'd better go ask them!" She mewed, "but if they say they can't, or need to go on patrol don't argue."
Fernkit and Shallowkit nodded obediently before racing out of the den.
Juniperpaw and Yarrowpaw had been made apprentices about a moon ago and still liked visiting Shallowkit and Fernkit when they had the time to.
The kits entered the apprentices den, hoping their older friends would say yes.
