Draco woke up the next morning with a head-splitting hangover, an ugly reminder of his drunken stupor last night. A pained groan rasped his throat as he cradled his aching head, feeling the blood pounding on his temples in excruciating pulses.
He was quick to note Astoria's absence, something that he was vaguely thankful for. Draco did not really want his fiancee, or anyone for that matter, to see his current pitiful state.
His suffering was disturbed as a small house elf suddenly appeared with a resonated crack. The creature bowed so low that its stump-like nose almost touched the marble floor.
"Master Lucius requests for Master Draco in his study."
Draco almost cursed out of annoyance. "Tell my father I'll be meeting him in twenty minutes."
With this, the house elf disapparated with yet another crack.
Sighing, he stood up from his bed and padded toward the bathroom. He took a long, cold shower which eased his hangover a bit, and dressed up in a grey shirt and jeans.
A rumble in Draco's stomach told him that he had missed breakfast but he simply ignored it and made his way toward his father's study. Thankfully, neither Astoria nor his mother saw him on his way.
He knocked on the varnished door and immediately after, Lucius' voice responded with a curt "enter".
Draco opened the door and examined his father's face for a moment, trying to deduce what was so important that he needed to speak with him. However, the usual poker face of Lucius proved to be impossible to read and Draco's curiosity burned as his fear of the unknown grew. Surely, there was some serious matter that needed to be discussed and whatever it was, Draco was certain he wanted no part of at the moment.
"You wish to to speak with me, Father?" Draco sat down opposite Lucius, his face blank.
"Yes, Draco. Do you know why?" His father drawled, making Draco ever so slightly furrow his brows in confusion.
"I have no idea, Father. Am I supposed to know?"
Lucius leaned back on his chair and looked at his son, his gaze calculating. Draco waited for his father to speak as he grew frustrated and curious by the minute.
"Tell me, Draco. Where is your fiancee?"
"I assume Astoria is in the garden, or perhaps having breakfast." Draco's voice was uncertain. He absolutely had no idea where she was. "Is she?"
A small, humorless smirk appeared on the corner of Lucius' lips as if he knew exactly what Draco was gonna say.
"Careful, Draco. One would think she is not your fiancee at all given how little you seem to care."
Draco's jaw clenched at the taunting words of his father but said nothing. He had grown accustomed to Lucius testing his temper at every given chance. Whether it was to teach him a lesson or solely for his father's entertainment, Draco did not know.
"Mrs. Greengrass' illness has gotten worse. Astoria left this morning, right after she received the letter. Apparently, you were too drunk to see her off." Lucius continued with the same drawl that made his son's temper flare.
A pang of guilt crossed over Draco's face at the news, overpowering the trepidation he felt toward his father.
"I- I will visit Mrs. Greengrass today." Draco said shakily, avoiding Lucius' grey eyes.
"You shall." Lucius nodded . "However, I have something I need to talk to you about before you leave."
There was a look on Lucius' face. Draco could only tilt his head in anticipation.
