As I stared down at the ragged note, Janine panting and fanning her face with her long nails beside me, I couldn't imagine Sam was responsible for it too. It seemed too unlikely, after the way he stayed quiet before, his arms crossed and his jaw clenching. And the image Willow had showed me when I first arrived at the party, the one with the white text on the black background that was going around to everyone, was looming in my mind: Best party ever. Don't miss it.
The words came with a sort of sarcasm, given the gruesome events I had witnessed. The irony seemed almost intended. Like it was all a big joke. Like someone planned for everything to go wrong and thought it would be funny, and picturing Sam as that person seemed a little absurd. Perhaps he was in it with Elias, or perhaps the whole football team was working together to arrange the little scares. And although it was just a thought, I felt like a fool for messing with them in the first place; the popular kids.
My senses returned when I heard Megan enter the house. Her eyes widened at the sight of Janine and I, and I realised how terrified my face must have looked. She approached me and asked me what had happened, then saw the note for herself and covered her mouth. 'Another one?' She cried, her voice muffled through shaking fingers. 'How?'

'Janine,' I said, 'do you know who did this?' She looked at me as if I was stupid.
     'What? Of course not!'
