“And when did you start liking him?”

“I..I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“It’s okay, Camila. Your secret’s safe with me.” I said as I rubbed the back of her hand with my thumb. We stayed like that for a few minutes, just sitting in the dark.

“He doesn’t see me that way. I’m sure he’s told you that.” she said, finally breaking the silence. The sadness in her voice was hard to miss. I’m not sure why but I let go of her hand to pull her in for a hug. Once I did that, she started sobbing and hearing her break down like that just made me weak.

“He has. But that doesn’t mean it’s true. Besides, it’s not like there’s someone else he’s in love with.” I said hoping to make her feel better.

“But there is.” Shit. Me and my big mouth.

“Hey, listen to me. If you and Logan are meant to be, it’ll happen.”

“And if we’re not?” Of course she would ask that.

“Then it’s Logan’s loss because someone else will come along, Camila. And that someone will be lucky to have a great girl like you.” It’s true though. I don’t understand why Logan’s being stupid. How can he be in love with someone else when he’s got a great girl right here?

“I just don’t get it. Why do I have to be the only one? We’ve been in our own little bubble for years, just the two of us. And then one day, I just knew. I’m in love with him. Why didn’t that day ever come for him?”

“Some people just can’t recognize love, even when it’s right in front of them.” And as I spoke those words, a number of lights came back on. “Hey, the lights are back.” I said as she lifted her head from my shoulder.

“Oh no. I’m so sorry, Lauren. Your shirt’s wet because of me.”

“Don’t worry. It’s okay.” I said as I wiped her tears off her cheeks. “It’s just a shirt. It’ll dry. Come on, let’s get our phones while we have the chance. It looks like the school’s just running on generators at the moment.”

“Students and teachers of Chance Haven High School, this is Principal Robbins. Due to the power outage we’re experiencing, classes are suspended for the rest of the day. You are all advised to vacate the school premises within the next 30 minutes. Thank you.” I didn’t really expect that to be the first speech I would hear from this school’s PA system. But I’m not complaining.

We made our way back to the lockers to get our bags and check our phones. Mine was ringing so I picked it up.

“Why haven’t you been answering? I’ve been calling you and Logan since the power went out.” Doug said.

“Sorry. I’m in the library with Logan and Camila. We left our phones in our bags and we couldn’t really get them because it was way too dark here.”

“Are you three okay?”

“Yeah. What about you?”

“I’m fine. I’ll meet you guys in the parking lot in 5 minutes okay?”

Doug was leaning on the door of his Range Rover which was now parked right in front of the school entrance.

“Hey, little sis, would you mind driving?” he said as he threw his keys at me.

“Your Range Rover? Are you kidding??”
