Chapter Four

I left my room around 5 in the morning for a shower I never did fall back to sleep. I took a 20min shower then I brushed my teeth and put loose curls in my hair. Then I went to my room I grab out a my red round neckline off the shoulder tee shirt and my black skinny jeans and put them on then I look at all my shoes plain converses and a plain black snapback. I leave my room around 630 and head down to the kitchen and make myself some toast and eggs. Then I go to the table and sit to eat my breakfast. After I was down I ran out to my car with all my school stuff. I open my trunk and threw my duffle bag in. Then I opened my door and threw my backpack into the backseat. I get in my car and turn on my car and back out of the driveway. I park my car and get out and run over to Bianca’s and knock on the door. She opens the door and smiles at me she has her backpack in her hand. “How did you know I needed a ride?” She asks me with a smile. “I didn’t want to go to school by myself today will you go with me.” I say walking with her to my car I open the door for her and close it after she’s in. then get back in the driver’s side and turn my car back on and drive off.

“Todays the day you face your mom in court are you ready for this.” She says looking over to me “Not really but you’re going to be there right.” I say with smile. “Yes every step of the way I promise.” She says grabbing my free hand and kissing it. I pull into the school parking lot and find a spot to park. I get out of my car and shut the door I wait till Bianca was out to lock my car. I grab my book-bag of the ground and placed it over my one shoulder. I walk around my car and start to head into the school everybody and I mean everybody from teachers to students where all staring at me. I just kept my head down and walked to my locker. I threw the books I didn’t need into my locker and grabbed the books I did need. And shut my locker door. I felt someone grab my hand and I look over to see Ellie I gave her a weird look and she smiled “I’m glad to see you in school today. “ Ellie says giving my hand a gentle squeeze and walking away. I head into Mrs. Greyson’s and grab my normal seat. “Welcome back Kahlan I hope you did all the work you missed.” Mrs. Greyson says and she walks back to collect all of it. I handed her it and she smiled at me and gave my shoulder a gentle pat. “Alright class today where going to have a little test to see how much you learned these first few months of school.” Mrs. Greyson says and she hands out everyone the test. I grab a pencil and started my test the second I got it. I finished it and laid my head down.

“Kahlan, wake up.” Mrs. Greyson says as she lightly shakes me. I wake up and look at her the class was empty. “I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to fall asleep.” I say pleading with her. “Its fine just hurry to your next class before you’re late.” Mrs. Greyson says I got up grabbed my books and ran to my next class. I made it to my seat just in time for the bell to ring. I fall into my seat and stare at Charlie who was laughing. This whole class I kept my eye on the clock. The bell went off and I grabbed my books and headed to my locker. I saw Bianca waiting there for me along with Mrs. Greyson. I put my stuff in my locker and shut it. “You ready Sweetheart?” Mrs. Greyson says as we start to walk to the office to sign out. “I’m ready to start a new chapter of my life without my mom.” I say kind of sadden by what I’m saying but I can’t protect an alcoholic anymore. Bianca grabs my hand and holds it and we walk to her mother’s car. “You’re going to do fine Kahlan we’re going to be here for you.” Bianca says opening my door for me to get into the car and I get in and she shuts it and climbs in upfront.

Her mom pulls out of the school parking lot and heads to the court house. It took use about a 30mintues to get there Mrs. Greyson got us all lunch. When we got there I saw her my mother. I get out the car and stand against my door I feel Bianca grab my hand. “I told you Kahlan I will be here for you.” Bianca says kissing my cheek and walking with me over to Dustin, Kendall, Alexz, Jordan, and her mother. We all walk into the court house and into the court room. And sit behind the prosecutor and soon after my mom was brought into the court room and sat next to her lawyer. When the bailiff came in everyone stood up there was a jury of 12. When the judge comes into the court room. The Bailiff say “People of the court State prosecutor Stairwell vs. Mrs. Montgomery in the case of Child Abuse.” The bailiff says before adding “People you may be seated.” Everyone took their seats. “People call to the court Kahlan Montgomery.” Mr. Stairwell says pointing at me I stood up and walked to the bench. “Ms. Montgomery please place your right hand on this book.” The bailiff says I do as I am told “Do you promise to tell the truth and nothing but the truth.” The bailiff then says “Yes” I say before sitting down.
