Around midnight, Anne and Gilbert woke up, realizing they had fallen asleep on the floor. Their legs tangled together. His hands in her hair. Her face buried in his shirt. Gilbert smiles at her, his heart leaping at her beauty. The moonlight shines in through the window, giving her pale skin an ethereal glow.

Anne looks up at Gilbert's tousled hair. She runs her fingers through it. "Your hair is so soft." She whispers. He doesn't reply immediately, sure his heart has stopped completely this time.

It takes all of his willpower not to kiss her.

Since the thunder had stopped, Anne no longer needed to stay hugging Gilbert. So, she thinks, why can't I bring myself to pull away from him?

They lay there for a minute. "We should go to bed." Anne says, still not moving. After another minute passes, Gilbert nods, "Yeah, we should."

He stands up. He picks her up, carrying her bridal style up the stairs toward their rooms.

Anne looks at him in surprise, he smiles, "Did you think I wasn't strong enough to carry you?"

Gilbert lays her on her bed. Anne rubs the pad of her thumb across his cheek, "Good night, Gilbert."

He chokes. This is it, he thinks, my heart will never beat again, and it's all because of Anne Shirley-Cuthbert.

"Good night, Anne."
