I had just met Chase's mother and sister through MR. The 'visit' went well (I think!), and I decided to catch up with him after he was finished talking to them. It was his weekly thing to have some time with them, so I didn't know how long it would take.
I saw the light turn off his headset and him starting to move and take his headset off so I walked over to him.
"Did I pass?" I asked him. "Flying colours" he responded, clearly still adjusting from going from MR back to real life. "What do I win?" I asked, knowing how he'd reply. "Me" he says, his amber eyes glowing "Yes!" I replied with enthusiasm.
"So you had fun?" "Mhm". Passing a visit with your boyfriends family is a pretty big deal, and they were very accepting towards me. And the plans for next time make me excited.
"Good. So for the next one of these, I look forward to your mom telling me all your embarrassing stories" he said, heading to his before I could respond. Realising what he had said, I ran to catch him up. "Hey! That's not how this works!" I said, chasing after him but losing him.
But then I found him hearing him talking to his friends so I figured I'd let him have his time but waited for him until I heard "hey, if Miranda dumped you, do we got time for a game of Siege?". Sighing, I rolled my eyes and decided to walk in.
"Hey, if Miranda dumped you then" and I saw it to be Jodie and I knew what he was gonna say, so I thought I'd butt in before he could finish his sentence. "Then what?" I replied, startling him, and he turned to look at me.
"Then that would be tragic, and we should mourn the death of your relationship, from a respectable distance" he answered. Good for him that he can improvise. "Smart boy. What's this about a game?" I asked, wanting to have some time with Chase before our shifts were over. "Siege!" "Sorry fellas, my queen summons me". "So, no Siege?" and Chase shook his head. I smiled and looked at him, and the boys started clearing off.
"See that? Said no to gaming with the boys and everything" Chase said to me, pointing out that he was agreeing to spending some time together. "What, you want a cookie?" I responded sarcastically, but he knew that I was secretly happy. "What do you think? Meet you-know-where in about 30?" He asked, referring to the balcony that we spend our evenings together at, watching the sunset.
"They haven't ordered us to stop yet" I reminded him, but we both knew that we were practically on duty 24/7 anyway, what with the troubles there's been with the Union. "My girl" he replied fondly, and we both leaned in to kiss.
Suddenly, an alarm started. The one that we only ever heard in drills. We hadn't had one that long ago, so this was concerning and we both looked up at the speaker that was telling us to go to our battle stations.
"C'mon, be a drill" Chase complained quietly, despite both of us knowing that it probably wasn't. Straight after he said this, the alarm went on to say "this is not a drill". He rolled his eyes and looked glum. I know it reminded him of the last time he went through this, where he lost one of his friends. I needed to cheer him up so that we could get through this.
"How'd the song go? You only live but once" I asked, reminding him of what made him happy. "Let the good times roll" he responded. I pulled him closer to me by grabbing his jacket and we passionately kissed, his arms going round to caress me.
I breathed in scent and made sure to remember it until I was able to see him again. We stared at each other for a few seconds before letting go of each other and turning towards where we had to go.
Halfway across, I turned just to see him one more time and as if he knew that I did, he did the same and he did his salute to say "see you soon" before turning away. I smiled and stared at him for a second, then having to turn back to where I needed to go.
I didn't know that that was the last time I was going to be able to see him properly.
