The entire plane was in pieces..the seats had fallen over, the middle aged man next to her was bleeding heavily that his blood reached to her right elbow. She was lying on her stomach and her weight was concentrated on her left shoulder.
The seat belt had saved her life. She had toppled over only in the last second of the crash (while she was still unconscious from the hit her head took during the turbulence). She must have swayed to the left first, and then fallen forward because of the inertia effect. The man next to her was inclined to the right and the plane deck was a bit slanted. This meant that plane had crashed on it's right wing.
The man next to her began to move and mumble. Arya immediately made an effort to sit up. She was somehow placed on the foot area between the two rows of seats. Just how bad was the crash!?
A sharp moan attracted her attention back. The man , yes she thought. She tried to standup, that's when she sensed a sharp pinch like sensation on on her right leg. It was bleeding. Her head too seemed wibbly wobbly. She managed to support herself on one leg while she held her left shoulder with her right hand. She limped towards the man slowly and bent over to help him.
He said two words.Anadacia dies. He went silent after that.
Arya shook with the impact of what she had just seen. A man die- in front of her eyes. Shakingly, she looked around fearing what might greet her next. There were so many people. Few of them half alive and many simply refused to move. The cabins were open, a few we're groaning, and that flight attendant , she was bent over a woman , checking her pulse. Her sky blue suit was dirty and torn indicating that she too saw the escape of a hair's breadth.
'Come here" she waved at Arya.
"How badly are you hurt?" She asked as she reached out for the first aid kit.
"My left shoulder hurts. And my leg ..."
"Alright, not that bad." She breathed a sigh of relief. "Help me will you" she said in a shaky voice. Arya numbly nodded.
"I have already called out for help, We might survive after all.." she said holding on to the glimmer of hope.
Together Arya and the flight attendant began to find their way about. It was nearly Dawn and the the mild rays of sun began to light up the depth of the casualities around. The conscious set included an old couple, a 12 year old , a teenage girl ( with a rib fracture) and still counting. Arya never in her life had hoped this strong for everyone to survive...
After a while, they heard sirens wailing. That's when Arya began to think- Where exactly they had crashed. The last time she peeked at the window it was night. Now where were they?
She could spot trees sorounding her. It was like they had crashed into the middle of a forest. But where exactly? There was no chance that they were near land. The attendant( she prefers to call that woman) had said that they still had 5 hours of journey left to reach their destination. This was before they crashed. Arya felt that she was missing something vital. But what?
"Hey you there!" A voice brought her back from her thoughts. A nurse approached her.
"Are you alright?" He asked in a concerned voice. "Your shoulder seems to be swollen"
Arya let him take a look at her shoulder."Tch tch tch" he clicked his tongue. He looked like he was in his late 40s but a person who knew his profession well.
"Is it that bad? It did hurt a lot...""It would have for sure hurt you because this ma'am, I suspect , (in plain words) is a shoulder joint dislocation-. You shouldn't have moved it about that much." He shook his head in disapproval. "Let me tie you a splint" The nurse continued his job while his fellow nurses were running about helping others on the site.
"You are very lucky ma'am" he continued as he worked. "You were near the left wing when the flight crashed, weren't you?"
Arya opened her mouth to reply when he went on with his one sided conversation. He had asked a rhetorical question. Arya doesn't like others doing rhetorical questions on her.
"Good for you. You see, not much survivors here in the plane. Such crashes are very rare here ma'am. Actually, never have happened. I must say-"
"Where exactly is here?" Arya cut across his monologue.
"Where do you think we are ma'am?" The nurse gave a knowing expression.
"Looks like a forest, more like an island"
The nurse stopped for a moment and then replied without looking up "In the middle of nowhere"
Arya was now getting irritated. Was it the nurse who was annoying or her pain. No time for games.
"Middle of nowhere?" She asked in a pitchy tone.
She opened her mouth to say something, rather she slapped her mouth when the realization hit her. This was a transatlantic flight. They couldn't have reached the mainland. The last time she checked the air route, she didn't remember seeing an island. What is this place?
She was really in the middle of nowhere.
