The mattress seemed to resist Arya's movement as her thoughts swirled inside her head. She could see herself leaning against wall addressing the blonde standing across the room.
"You won't believe me because you love him. I won't stop because I care for you." She could see the skinny girl shift the weight on her legs with closed eyes and clenched fists.
"This is the third time this is happening. Please Vega" Arya recollected moving a step forward," Please don't do this to yourself, don't give up doing things that you love just because he doesn't like it."
Vega had said nothing to this, but her cold stare from the day before made Arya shiver. With a stupid determination, Knowing that she wasn't getting anywhere with this, she had continued speaking.
"If he had truly loved you, he would have seen the effort you are investing into this relationship. Let alone acknowledge your sacrifices, he would have surely prevented you from even making such decisions. Any relationship will be fruitful only if an understanding and trust exists. Loving is growing alongside the love of your life and not being caged within his inhibitions. Please-"
"Enough" Vega had cut in with a smooth voice. Hands folded and stone faced- A look that was to become evergreen in Arya's memory. "You, Arya, YOU need to know where to interfere and where not. Having nil experience, YOU shouldn't be the one who's saying all these 'wise' words."
"It isn't your fault" She had smirked and continued. "It's mine, I didn't know where to draw the line. It would be better if you would stay out of my love life. That's the second and last time I am telling you. Any more nonsense from your side, you will lose me."
Arya laid on her back and stared at the ceiling .She bit her lip in an effort to forget that painful conversation. The more she tried the more the picture came back crystal clear.
How dare you? How could you accuse Richie with the guilt of cheating on me?" Vega had uttered in a shrill voice. " The girl you saw him with was his cousin,"
"How do you know?" Arya remembered interrupting
"Because he told me himself" was Vega's reply
"Exactly" Arya had continued like a fish looking for a net. "You believe him so blindly and he's using you. He doesn't care for you at all. You were a person who detested wearing makeup and now look at you, you resemble a doll, not a human". Vega's fury had risen at this point.
"People change all the time, why does me changing affect you so much while you always want to have your will?" Vega spoke through gritted teeth.
"If the change is for worse, I will and shall object. YOU have always been a strong person, YOU have never been afraid of facing problems, YOU have been raised by sacrifices made by two other loving and caring strong individuals. What went wrong now?" Arya had confronted bang on.
"Shut up Arya , If you really cared you wouldn't be hurting me like this." Vega had pointed out in a high tone.
"I do deeply care and that's exactly why I am not able to sit back and relax when you are hurting yourself idiot!" Arya had said at the top of her voice.
"That's it." Vega looked daggers "I am leaving." She had declared with a final tone. "When your sister comes home, tell her that you have lost it on my behalf".
With those words, she had stormed out.
Immediately after this, the usually neat and organized Loft became a complete mess- the state in which Amaira had found it in the next morning. The hangings on the window pulled down, cupboard open, the dream catcher thrown on the floor, the neatly rolled up mattress in a pitiable state, the table that stood against the wall at a right angle moved into the wrong angle and its contents askew- Each indicating that Arya had taken out her anger on it.
Arya tossed and turned uncomfortably. The mattress which had always been her go to cure if anything went wrong tonight felt strangely alien. As the night proceeded into total darkness, Arya unconsciously began to observe the stable and calm breathing of her sister who slept next to her. Strange enough, her sister never felt like a person who could madly be in love, or one to expect huge amounts of privacy. The sound of her breathing became the lullaby for Arya which magically coerced her into a deep slumber.
The next day was a complete jam packed one. From meeting friends and talking, to shopping for gear, every minute passed by unnoticed. Yet regularly Arya found herself checking her phone-Looking for a reply from Vega. She had texted her as the first thing in the morning asking if they could meet up. The message somehow managed to hold the unread status for the entire day.
The week that followed saw Arya and Amaira bustling about and cleaning up the condo and their loft. Things fought over, ownership on ambiguous items justified and claimed, disposing unnecessary stuff, things that needed to be sold(including Arya's favorite bike and stereo) sold out on EBay and other online portals, looking through albums for an hour, talking, eating, shopping and so on.
Baby too visited them from to time to time to help them. Amaira, who was adept at sorting and organizing, had only two bags of stuff to carry. Arya as usual, though a fan of neatness, found herself in a dilemma. She couldn't bring herself to part with her belongings which she had dearly held for over the past 12-16 years. In this process of wrapping up, she made things so messy that she had to order Google to find her phone. Google faithfully carried out this order and the phone was found in her morning kit (the kit that contained all her morning items including toothbrush, toothpaste, body lotion etc.).
The work continued amidst Amaira's commitments and Arya's confusion. What hurt most was that a week had passed, yet the message was still unread.
