SARAH
I was worried. I really didn’t remember anything from last night, besides falling off the horse. I want to ask Kyle what happened, but I am afraid of the answer. When I am in a lot of pain, which doesn’t happen often, I tend to not think before I speak. My thoughts ran back to when Kyle came to my side and I thought, Maybe I should get hurt more often. I really hope that I didn’t blurt anything along those lines out to him. I would literally die. Well, I am sure he will tell me if anything important happened.
Kyle is nowhere to be seen, not that I can see very far, and Cherry is still selling things at the market. I feel so vulnerable having to stay on this couch. I considered getting up but I know that it would only worsen my condition, so I suck it up and deal with sitting here. I get bored rather quickly and I know that I need to do something, or else I might go mad.
All of the windows are open in the house, and a nice breeze is blowing. It is really peaceful here. My eyes begin to drift closed, when I notice something in the corner of my eye. I turn and realize it is a butterfly that had drifted in through the window. But it wasn’t a normal butterfly. It was the most beautiful butterfly I have ever seen.
This butterfly had a sort of glow around it. It was a mix of blues and purples, but I couldn’t make out where the blue stopped and the purple began because the colors seemed to be constantly shifting and mixing. All of the sudden I had the urge to follow the butterfly, so I did. When I stood up, I couldn’t even feel the pain that I was in only moments before. I silently followed the butterfly out of the peaceful house and outside.
As I walked, I spotted Kyle sitting under a tree, playing with a piece if grass, looking deep in thought. For some reason, I knew that I didn’t want him to spot me, so I hid behind a row of rose bushes until I was out of his sight range. I continued to follow the butterfly as it ventured into the woods by Cherry’s house.
I walked for what seemed like forever before the butterfly began to slow down. We made one more turn, and then I saw our destination.
Before me stood a woman. She was stunning, and made of the same material that the butterfly was made of. The butterfly flew up to the woman’s shoulder and froze. I realized that it must have been the woman’s pin. The woman smiled down at me and spoke.
“Hello Sarah. You do not know who I am, but I know you. I have been watching over you since you were very small. I am so proud of you. I needed to wait until you realized what you were to see you. I couldn’t take any risks.”
“Who are you?” I ask.
“Well, you can call me Kanani. You will know who I am in time. I brought you hear to speak to you about your journey. You have to be strong, but you also have to accept help. You will need it if you are to survive. There is also something you should know about Cherry. You can trust her. Being the closest to the Angel forest, she has seen things that many mortals have not. She will play a key part in helping you discover who you are.”
“How do you know all of this, Kanani?” I ask, because I cannot think of anything else to say.
“You will learn in time Sarah, you will learn in time.”
And that is the last thing I heard before passing out for the second time in twenty four hours.
KYLE
I slowly got up from my spot beneath the tree. It was a beautiful time to be outside, so I sat out there, getting lost in my thoughts. When I stood, I had a weird sense that something was wrong. I decide to check on Sarah to see if she needs anything.
As I walk into the house, my stomach drops. The couch is empty. I tell myself to calm down; she probably just needed to go to the bathroom. I look, but the bathroom door is wide open, and she is not in there.
I start to panic and run towards her temporary bedroom. I bust open the door, and it is deserted. Out of desperation, I fling open all of the doors in the house, but Sarah is definitely not here, I don’t really understand how she could have got passed me, but I was pretty lost in my thoughts. Then I completely stopped my frantic search as one thought hit me like a freight train:
What if she was caught?
