Some Important Sunnahs that Every Muslim Should Follow

Sunnah is what our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, did in terms of His actions and attitude. Being a Muslims it is our duty to follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) because the actions of Prophet (PBUH) are the teachings of Allah Almighty mentioned in Quran. When we consider the Sunnah in its broader sense then it includes everything that our Prophet (SAW) did, the wishes and prohibitions of Allah are also included in the Sunnah. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Whoever revives my Sunnah then he has loved me. And whoever loved me, he shall be with me in Paradise.” (Tirmidhi)


Allah Almighty stressed the obligation of showing complete obedience and submission to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in many verses of Quran. Allah says: “And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad PBUH) gives you, takes it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it), and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment “(Quran, 59:7). There are many important Sunnahs that Prophet (SAW) has left for us to keep an eye on.

Sunnah’s of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

There are some important Sunnahs which grips the higher quantity of incentive. Below we will discuss some of them in detail:

Always Smile: It is the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to always smile. Face all difficulties in your life with a smile that also means be positive in the times of uncertainty. So follow the Sunnah of Prophet (SAW) smile more often and spread joy and peace around you as the Prophet (PBUH)

Sleeping and Waking up Early: Our sleeping pattern plays an important role in our ability to function effectively during a day. Fajr is the holiest time of the day, if one awakens at Fajr and offer prayers then he/she will feel meditate and calm throughout the day. If you want to rise in early hours then you need to sleep early as our body requires a decent amount of rest which we will get from proper sleep. Aisha (RA) reported about Prophet Muhammad (SAW) that: “He (SAW) used to sleep early at night, and get up in its last part to pray, and then return to his bed.” (Bukhari)

Using Miswak: Miswak or Siwak has many anti-bacterial qualities, making it a great way to maintain hygiene of the mouth. Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that Allah’s Messenger said: “If it were not that it would be difficult on my nation then I would have ordered them to use the Siwak for each prayer” (Tirmidhi). Miswak supports in eliminate Plague from teeth and makes gum tougher. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) revealed it thousand years ago what scientists just revealed about Miswak.

Oiling Hair: Many of us do not recognize that the act of oiling is a part of the Sunnah. Oiling hair on a regular basis prevents hair loss, promotes strong and lustrous hair by strengthening hair protein and relaxes the mind by soothing the brain’s nerves and capillaries.

Being Quiet and Speaking Good: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “He who believes in Allah and the Hereafter if he witnesses any matter he should talk in good terms about it or keep quiet” (Muslim). From this hadith, it is concluded that the beauty of this Sunnah is that it will help you save time and reduce the amount of energy used to consider irrelevant matters being discussed. Wise people usually keep quiet when they see that the other person will not understand them.

It when you eat or drink: When you eat or drink while standing it leaves disastrous effects on your body, as well as it’s measured as ill manners. Sitting when you eat or drink makes one feel calm as well as it helps in absorption of food. It was narrated from Anas (RA): “The Prophet (SAW) prohibited that a man should drink while standing.” (Qatadah said) So it was said: “And eating?” He (Anas) said: “That is worse.”(Tirmidhi)

Say Salaam and Bismillah before entering the house: It is essential to utter the Name of Allah upon entering a home in order to prevent our doors being open for Shaytaan. Shaytaan is an enemy of productivity and success; his ultimate goal is to see us fail in our journey to develop a relationship with Allah. So follow the Sunnah of saying Bismillah and Salaam before entering your house and defeat the Shaytaan.

Visit the sick: Beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Feed the hungry, visit the sick, and set free the captives”(Bukhari). This Sunnah of visiting the sick grips the higher spot as associated with other Sunnahs. So, next time you hear of someone who is ill, try your best to go beyond sending them a ‘get well soon’ and practice a forgotten Sunnah make the effort to be physically present and comfort them.

Untying the three knots: Untie three knots in which the first knot by waking up early, the second one is by making Wudu and third is by praying Fajr.

Maintain 1/3rd rule in eating: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has set us 1/3rd rule in eating. Which recommends that your meals should be well-adjusted as in do not overeat, which could lead to other kinds of stuff like acidity or vomit, or do not under eat, which could lead one’s body to the dimness. So, eat agreeing to your need and follow the Sunnah of Prophet (SAW).
