Deep chapter 3:
The school was remodeled over the summer, thank god, and when Skylar and I walked in we barely recognized it. Where the lobby used to be there was a big garden with a sculpture and tables.
“Holy cow, Avery! Can you believe this?” Skylar yelled as she ran over and sat on top of a picnic table. I rolled my eyes and tugged her arm toward the entrance.
We continued our walk through the school and found a student lounge, updated cafe, and high-tech classrooms with touch screen tables.
The bell rang and I said goodbye to Skylar as we went separate ways for our first class. Sky had Drama and I had Chem. When I finally found the Chemistry Lab, the only familiar face I recognized was Ryders. He waved me over and I took a seat on the stool next to him.
“Chemistry? First thing in the morning? I don’t think so.” Ryder muttered and took a sip from his travel mug.
“Yeah. I feel you.” I said and waited for the teacher to begin his introduction.
The bell rang again, signalling classes to start.
“Hello students, my name is Mr. Wilson and I will be your Chemistry lab and lecture teacher this semester. First I would like you all to pay attention while I show you the features of the new Davenport Lab.
Ryder rolled his eyes and whispered, “Can you believe this?”
“This all new state of the art lab has been donated by someone who is new to the Gulf Shores community. I want you all to give a warm welcome and thank you to Mr. Davenport.”
A tall man in a dark navy colored suit entered the room and shook hands with Mr. Wilson.
“Students, I hope you enjoy this lab. It was my pleasure to provide this for you all.” And with that he left the room.
“The Davenport’s just think they can show up and ruin everything good about Gulf Shores.” Ryder said while tapping his pencil on his notebook.
“What do you have against them?” I asked.
“Mr. Davenport wants to subdivide Dolphin Bay. He wants to make a big gated community and tear down the donut shop and the bowling alley and the surf shop.”
......
My friend Alyssa was in my next class, World Religion. She was short and had a brown mess of curls. She was nice and we had met in our lifeguard training course. I sat with her at a touch screen table in the back.
Unfortunately, the teacher of this class, had a seating chart. She moved me to a desk by the window and Alyssa to the other side of the classroom.
Class was halfway over and the teacher had already gone over the rules and the syllabus when a tall, girl with short blonde hair opened the classroom door. She went up to the teacher and handed her a tardy slip. Then the teacher asked her to sit in the seat beside me. As she walked toward me I noticed her big blue eyes and her shell necklace.
She was the unconscious girl from the beach. Did she remember me? Did she know I was the one who helped her?
She said down and I introduced myself. “I’m Avery. Nice to meet you.”
“Yeah. I’m Caroline.” she responded blankly.
A second person appeared in the doorway and I recognized his dark blue suit. Mr. Davenport came in and talked about the new computer lab this class would be using once a week.
After his speech about how happy he was to give this to us he walked toward my table instead of the door.
“Caroline. You forgot this this morning.” He whispered and handed her a small pill bottle.
She didn’t look up at him or say anything. But she extended her thin shaky arm and took the bottle from him.
Mr. Davenport looked down at her and sighed. “I will see you at home, honey.” And briskly walked toward the door.
