Fitz was busy working, when Deke came over to him. Oh no! Thought Fitz. What does he want now.
"Grandpa, I need to ask you something." Said Deke.
"Great..." Fitz whispered under his breath. He put down what he was working on. "What is it?" He asked.
Deke was silent for a moment, and Fitz wondered if he had changed his mind about asking the question. "If there was a girl that I liked, what should I do?" Deke asked, finally.
Fitz gave him a puzzled look. "I'm not a good person to ask." He said after a moment.
"I've seen what you and grandma have. You two really love each other. You're like two halves of the same person." Said Deke "Just tell me how you got together."
Fitz sighed. "It's a long story." He warned.
"I've got time." Said Deke, as he sat down in a chair. Deke was trying to impress Daisy, but it didn't seem to be working.
Deke was giving him an expectant look, so Fitz sat down in the chair next to him.
"I first met Jemma at the academy." Fitz began.
"What's an academy?" Deke interrupted.
"It's where Simmons and went to learn to be S.H.I.E.L.D. agents." Fitz replied.
"So they teach you to fight?" Deke asked.
"Well, yes but Jemma and I took science. We worked in the labs, not in the field. At least not until recently."
"That sounds boring." Said Deke.
Fitz opened his mouth to object and say that science was fun. To explain why he loved it so much. But Deke interrupted. "Just go on with the story."
"She was the smartest student there. I was the second smartest, she was only slightly smarter than me. I always admired her, but I didn't really know how to express my feelings for her. My father was not a kind man he never said anything nice about me. No matter how hard I tried to please him it was never good enough. So I had never really been taught how to show affection."
Deke nodded. He wondered if that was why he seemed so distant some times. Maybe that was why he always seemed to think that he wasn't good enough, because his own father had told him that he wasn't. Deke had noticed that only Simmons was really able to convince him that he was good enough.
"I'm sorry that I don't try to do more with you Deke. It's just that I'm afraid that I'll turn out just like my father. I don't want you to go through what I did. I know that I don't really say this, but I am proud of you. You had a hard life, and it's not your fault."
Deke was surprised by the complement, especially coming from Fitz. "Thank you." He said
Fitz nodded, then continued the story. "I wanted to be her friend. But I didn't know how to go about it. I think I kind of annoyed her at first."
Deke thought about how annoyed Daisy always seemed. "So if a girl is annoyed with you, that means that she likes you?" He asked.
"I don't know." Fitz answered. "We were assigned to work on a project together, and I was secretly thrilled. But I didn't let on to her that I was. She was a little disappointed to have me as a partner at first, I think. But while working together on the project we became best friends. We found that we were three times as smart together as we were apart. And we've stuck together every since."
"That doesn't sound too hard." Said Deke.
"Oh, that was just the beginning." Fitz answered. "I never told her how I really felt about her until it was almost too late. We were trapped in a containment mogul in the ocean sinking deeper and deeper. There was only one oxygen mask, so I told her that she should take it. She begged me not to do it, but I love her and I'm willing to die for her. She told me that I was her best friend in the whole world."
"What did you say?"
"I told her that she was more than that. Then I gave her the oxygen mask and opened the door. I ran out of air and went unconscious. But she pulled me to the surface. I'm not going to try to explain the science of it to you, because I know you won't understand. But after I regained consciousness, I wasn't the same. I don't think that Jemma could handle seeing me that way. And I don't think that she wanted to face the fact that I cared about her, and saw her as more than just a friend. So she went to work undercover in Hydra."
"What's Hydra?" Deke asked.
"An evil organization." Fitz replied.
"That sounds dangerous." Deke commented.
"It was." Fitz answered. "If I had known where she was I would have been worried out of my head. I missed her. I was so used to having her around that, I would talk to her, even though she wasn't there."
He looked at Deke, who was now listening very intently. Then he continued. "She finally came back. But there was still a gap between us. But slowly we mended our friendship. And eventually, she admitted that she cared about me too. After some time, I asked her to go out to dinner with me."
"Finally!" Deke exclaimed.
"But right after she agreed to go to dinner with me, she got pulled into a rock like the monolith. She was teleported to another planet."
"What!" Deke yelled.
"I did all I could to get her back. I finally found a way to get to the planet where she was. I went there and found her. I brought her back. But she wasn't the same and I could tell that she had been through a lot. But I couldn't get her to talk about it. We finally went to dinner, but she was crying. I wanted to help her, but I didn't know how. Finally she told me about everything that had happened to her on the planet."
"She told me that she had met a guy there, Will, and that she liked him. So, I decided to go back to the planet to get him, and bring him back for her."
"What!?! Why would you do that?" Deke asked loudly.
"Because I love her." Fitz answered quietly. "She didn't understand either. I tried to explain it to her. She wanted me to be angry with her, and she couldn't understand why I would help him. I told that I was angry, but not at her."
"You were probably mad at the other guy." Said Deke, thinking that Fitz wanted to find him so that he could give him a piece of his mind. At least that is what he would have done in that position.
"No, he saved her life, and she cared about him. So, I couldn't be angry with him. I was angry because I felt that everything was trying to pull us apart. I thought we were cursed, that the universe was trying to pull her away from me." Fitz explained. "I told her that I felt like we were cursed. And I promised I would bring him back, because I knew that she cared about him because he had saved her. And she said that I had saved her too."
"I kissed her. But then I told her again that we were cursed. I went back to the planet, but unfortunately Will was dead. When I got back Jemma and I realized how much we loved each other. For a little while, everything was wonderful. But it didn't last long. I helped a friend of mine make an LMD."
"A what?"
"A life model decoy." Fitz explained. "But she ended up being evil. She put me in the framework where I was known as The Doctor... I did terrible things in the framework as The Doctor. But Jemma came to find me. She was the only one who reminded me of who I really was. She could see the good in me, even as The Doctor. She brought me back from the framework. I was broken, I felt tremendous guilt for everything that I had done in the framework. But she reminded me that I didn't have a choice in the framework. But I do now."
"We finally defeated the evil robot and saved the world. So, we went to get some pie to celebrate."
"You ate pie! That sounds awesome!" Deke interrupted.
"Then, while we were eating. Everyone but me, just vanished!" Fitz continued. "They were brought to the future. I had to help my friends. I had to get her back. So I froze myself for 70 years. I came to the lighthouse, pretending to be a bounty hunter to rescue my friends."
"Then I saw her... I saw Jemma. I have never been so happy to see anyone in my life, as I was when I saw her then. But I had to stay calm and try to act normal, because she had been enslaved by Kasius. I went over to her, I never wanted to be parted from her again. I poured my heart out to her, and finally asked her to marry me. Only to find that she couldn't hear me, because Kasius had blocked her from hearing anyone, but himself."
"I hate that guy!" Deke shouted.
"So do I." Fitz agreed. "I tricked him into turning off the device that was stopping her from hearing me. Finally I was able to rescue her and Daisy."
"Daisy?" Deke asked.
"Yes," Fitz answered, wondering why he was acting so strange. Then again, he was Deke, he always acted strange. So, Fitz continued. "When I was reunited with Jemma at last. I told her that I would never leave her again. Then I kissed her. She asked me to marry her, and of course I agreed. And as you already know, once we finally got back from the future, we got married. The End." Fitz concluded.
Deke just stared at him. "... that sounds like super complicated." He said at last.
"It was." Fitz agreed. "But it was worth it."
Deke thought for a moment. "You're right. Daisy is worth it too."
Fitz let his jaw drop. "Daisy!?!" He exclaimed. He gave his grandson an odd look. "You're in love with Daisy?"
"What!? No!" Deke answered.
Fitz put his hands on his hips. "Don't bother denying it." He said.
Deke looked around the room awkwardly. "Anyway, Thanks gramps." He said.
Fitz gave him an angry look. "I told you not to call me that!" He said.
