Rabbitkit pressed his small, white body against his mother's tail. Spottedalder smiled at her dozing son.
Rabbitkit woke up when Dashkit nudged him. Rabbitkit opened his eyes, startled.
"Wanna go to the elders?" Dashkit grinned. He pointed to Yewkit and Bushkit, who were waiting at the mouth of the den.
Rabbitkit yawned. "Sure," he answered simply, and then looked at Spottedalder. His mother nodded, and the kits exited the den.
"I had the weirdest dream," Rabbitkit murmured. He flicked his tail unconsciously. "Whitestar was gazing at me, and...he said something. I couldn't really make it out, but he said Blackclaw, deputy, and leader."
Yewkit shrugged. "We're almost there!" he yelped, excited.
Oakcloud placed a paw in front of the kits. "Where do you you think you're going?" he laughed.
"Just to the Elders' Den," Dashkit answered, confident.
"Okay, I thought you were...never mind. Go on."
The kits, their troubled looks faded, reached the Elders' Den. Inside, they saw Redpelt talking to One-tooth.
"Wo, I wam wot bad acth spppeaging," One-tooth snapped. Redpelt rolled his eyes and then saw the kits.
"Here to listen to some stories?" he asked kindly. The kits nodded and Halftail emerged from the corner.
"Scary or fun?"
"Scary," Dashkit answered proudly.
"We'll tell you the story of...," Halftail lingered. "About Snowbriar and Whitestar when they were kits.
"Once, those strong cats were little kits, pressing against their mother, One-tooth. When Snowkit and Whitekit were about five moons old, they decided to venture to show they could become apprentices early.
"The kits dropped by the lake and lapped some water. Just then, Snowkit say a small thrush in the distance. Whitekit, out of pure excitement, accidentally fell into the lake, but Snowkit was too focused on the thrush to notice. She stalked closer, and closer. She was just about tho get it, when old Redpelt here caught them.
"He was with his apprentice, Fuzzypaw. She died a few moons later, it was very sad."
Redpelt looked down, sadness dripping from him.
"The thrush flew away, and Snowkit started scolding Redpelt."
Redpelt looked up, his lips twitching.
"Redpelt asked, 'Where's Whitekit?' and Snowkit said, 'By the lake'. Your father, Rabbitkit, was drowning! Redpelt leaped in to catch Whitekit, but he couldn't. Whitekit's nose was just above the water, when suddenly, Berrytail of RiverClan somehow came over and saved him. The young, kind warrior said he saw Whitekit drowning and raced over, promising he didn't steal any food. That's "
Rabbitkit looked up in awe. Whitestar, his noble father, once almost drowned? It almost made him laugh!
Rabbitkit left a little earlier than brave Dashkit and little [smol] Yewkit. Whitestar spotted him and rasped his tongue on his son's shoulder.
"Where are you wandering off to?" he asked gently, his voice deep with wisdom. Rabbitkit remembered the tales of Whitestorm, [;n;], the gentle, strong, kind, magnificent warrior who died as Firestar's first deputy in a battle against Scourge.
"Are you related to Whitestorm?" Rabbitkit asked.
"Yes."
Rabbitkit smiled, a purr in his throat. He pressed his body against his father's and bounded off to the nursery.
