I'm Back Baby
August 13th, 1988
My room was in literal shreds. Today officially marked two weeks of being in Korea already. School would soon start in 9 days, and I was not ready.
"Scarlet, come down sweetheart!"
Quickly, I made my way down the stairs outside of my room and found my way to her. She was opening up a new moving box in the middle of what was supposed to be our living room.
"Hey, how's your unpacking coming?"
I shrugged, "I guess it's okay..." I sat on the floor in front of her. She removed her eyes from the box and looked up at me.
"Are you comfortable here?"
I fixed my eyes onto her and nodded. "Yeah," I said with uncertainty remaining in my tone.
"You promise?" My mom asked concerned. Mom is a big worrier, she just wants the best for me. She always puts my happiness before her own, which I've told her not to do many times before.
I smiled and nodded, "I promise."
She sighed in relief and her worry line faded away. "Okay good."
"Can I go out and see around the neighborhood for a little bit?"
She smiled and nodded yet again. I walked back upstairs and into my excuse of a bedroom. Searching through a few boxes, I found my high waisted denim shorts, a light blue turtleneck, and my handheld cassette tape player. I changed quickly, grabbed my headphones, and my new copy of 'Sweet Child O' Mine' by Guns n' Roses. I popped the tape in and put on my headphones.
Play.
Once I got to the front door, I yelled out to my mom, "Bye, Mom. I'll see you later!" I slammed the door closed.
Stepping outside felt nice. The weather was hot but there was a gentle breeze brushing through the air. I skipped down the pavement and examined all of the nearby houses. This place isn't too terribly different from America. I walked onto many different streets, examining all of the people outside. It gave me a taste of how people around here are.
The fashion here wasn't different at all from the US. Parents dressed on the conservative side. Any teen that was outside dressed pretty revealing. I saw many guys with chicks on their sides. The guys mainly wore tight skinny jeans and a button up shirt with basically every button actually undone. The girls had teased, voluminous hair, and wore short and stretchy shorts with a striped crop top. Every now and again there would be a decently covered up girl in some long pants and a turtle neck.
While walking by, I saw a mom struggling to carry all the groceries in as the dad played with all four of their kids in the yard. Everything looked perfect. The yard was well kept, and very green. The mom came out of the house with a big phony smile as she got down to hug all of her children. The two boys escaped her grasp and piled onto their dad. Everything looked too perfect. It was all fake looking. Everyone had their public masks on. When in reality they're an atomic family. Bound to burst at any second. The dad's fairly wealthy. The mom is young and naive. And, there are two boys and two girls. Typical.
