*How About Coffee?*
(Amelia's P.O.V)
I heaved another sigh and sifted through the mound of paperwork, picking out a random folder and allowing my pen to scribble whatever details were required. There were so many files to get through; perhaps it was a mistake accepting this job.
No. You can't think like that. Not many people are qualified to be profilers; you've got to show them you can do it, Amelia.
Whatever.
Reid returned about ten minutes later, in a clean vest, his face unreadable. When he saw me and the coffee on the desk, however, he grinned. My cheeks began radiating heat and I refused to meet his gaze. Make it up to him? How, exactly?
"Hey, thanks for the, uh, coffee," I heard his voice by my ear. My head shot up.
"Oh, right, er, sure. I'm so sorry about the, uh, accident," I muttered, feeling flustered.
"Seriously, don't worry about it. Accidents happen." He shrugged and relief washed through me. I returned to my paper work and watched the clock tick by slowly.
Time passed, and I finally reached the bottom of my stack. It was almost six o'clock, and the others were still working. I pushed the last report aside and leaned back in my chair with a huff of relief.
Now. How could I make it up to Spencer? He liked coffee, right? Perhaps I ought to take him for coffee somewhere. Or is that a stupid idea? Since all of this was caused by coffee in the first place?
Whatever. Might as well try.
As I stumbled up out of my seat, ready to confront Reid, a blonde haired woman with a bright smile entered the room. She instantly made her way to me and outstretched a hand.
"Special Agent Jennifer Jareau. You can call me JJ," she greeted with a warm laugh.
I smiled and shook her hand. "Agent Amelia Shields. Nice to meet you, JJ."
She nodded and strode away. I released a quick plume of air and walked over to Reid, slouched at his desk and skimming through a book at incredible speed. Every few seconds he'd turn the page, his eyes darting furiously to take in the text.
"You actually read that fast?" I inquired, causing his head to jolt up with a start. Surprise lapsed into embarrassment. He nodded tentatively.
"20,000 words per minute," he mumbled in a quiet voice.
"Impressive," I mused, leaning my hand against the chair. He flinched slightly. "So, um, Spencer, I was wondering if you like to maybe, uh, go for coffee later. I mean, you don't have to but I, er, wanted to make it up to you for earlier," I managed to mutter without rambling too much. Great, now his nervousness was rubbing off on me.
How many times had I asked a guy out to coffee? Almost none. I'd say it didn't go that bad, considering.
He put his book down and glanced up at me skeptically. "Really?"
His incredulity at being asked out by a woman forced a nervous laugh to roll off my to tongue. Quit being so nervous, Amelia. "Mm-hmm!" I hummed, glancing at the book. Arthur Conan Doyle, huh?
"Well, uh, sure. I'll be ready in about twenty minutes." A tinge of excitement edged his voice, and I felt a grin surface.
"Uh, okay. Meet you out front in twenty minutes then."
He nodded and I returned to my desk, feeling my heart jolt uncomfortably in my chest.
Stop it. It's merely a friendly gesture to apologise for earlier. Nothing more!
Just a friendly gesture? Yeah right!
*I've decided to stick to shorter chapters now. They're easier to write, ya know! Thanks for reading!*
