Rin: Can you start with a brief self-introduction?
Rotty: Sweet, all righty. Well, hi, I'm Rotty. I'm a homoerotica author, currently attending college. I enjoy long walks on the beach and frisky women. ... Oh wait. No, that's Dean. I, on the other hand, enjoy sitting at home, writing or dabbling in the darkness that is otaku-ism.
Rin: Haha, sounds like a great start. So why homoerotica? Did you start with that or did it gradually progress up to the steamy sex scenes you're known for?
Rotty: Heh, it gradually progressed. I was a little shy about it at first, haha. As for why homoerotica, it all draws back to the fact that it was fun and unique, since you don't see too much of it in stores.
Rin: On your profile, you identify as asexual. Is that more of a lack interest in sexual matter (which seems a bit confusing since you do write homoerotica) or you just don't define yourself as someone with a certain preference?
Rotty: More like a lack of sexual arousal, physically and mentally. But I don't write as myself. I write as the character. Like becoming a different person in order to write it. If I were to write as myself, there'd most likely not be any sexual content since I, personally, am not interested in the subject. Oddly enough. I hope I explained that correctly, haha.
Rin: Yeah, that makes sense. So then, how do you create your characters? As an amateur writer myself, I find it really hard to distinguish the characters from myself at times, yet you seem to do it flawlessly.
Rotty: You have to be a good people person. Not so much interacting, but observing. And while interacting helps, watching is just as good. You have to realize that not everyone thinks like you, and when you do interact with people, or even just listen, you can pick up on their thought processes. It's a little difficult to explain, haha.
Rin: Sounds like a lot of brain games.
Rotty: Yeah. It's mostly figuring out why people react the way they do, how they do it. There's a reason behind everything. It's figuring out that reason and that makes the character. You may not like smoking weed, but your character might because he needs relief, he's scared, he needs comfort, he likes the feeling, he needs the feeling, etc. It all depends on your character. It's like meeting a new person and getting to know them.
Rin: I see. I never thought about characters as being actual people before. But then for the more complex things of your characters, like their native languages, how do you do that?
Rotty: Research, research, research. And some more research, heh. I have to do research on the country or region that my character is from. For example, if they're from Japan, I have to do a lot of research on their culture, their language, their mannerisms, dos and don'ts, gestures that could be offensive to them, but not to me, as an American. Do enough and then flesh out the character's personality. Maybe the character is a rebel in Japan, so he slums it with the yakuza, but he wouldn't actually cause harm to anyone. He's just friends with one of the members, who eventually draws him in. This calls for research on both Japan and the yakuza.
