real life

THE MARTIAN WAS PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND. seven young adults were splayed around the room in various positions, some on the couch, some on the floor. two empty pizza boxes were discarded on the kitchen counter, and a tub of moose tracks ice cream was slowly melting on the coffee table.

charlie was content. her near breakdown of the other night was long forgotten, and she was immersed in the storyline of the movie she had seen too many times to count. she reached up to grab her ice cream, not looking away from the screen.

a snicker broke her out of her trance. "you like the movie, char?"

charlie turned her head to where amelié was lounging on the love seat, her phone camera pointed the girl on the floor wrapped in blankets and cuddling a tub of ice cream.

"i'm doing fantastic," charlie quipped, eating a spoonful. with a jolt, she remembered her conversation with chris. charlie looked around for the lid of the ice cream, and after spotting it by the fridge, stood up, letting the blankets fall from her shoulders.

ABBA played in the background. her hands were trembling. the cold air of the freezer blasted in her face, calming her nerves a bit. charlie hesitated standing up. should she say it? should she place that label on herself?

"char, you okay in there?" dakota peeked his head around the counter, taking in the girl on the floor. "what's up?"

charlie looked up suddenly, and stood, slamming the freezer door shut. "just thinking."

dakota frowned. "you can talk to us. that's why we're here."

"i know," charlie smiled sadly. she vaulted over the back of her couch, nearly landing on jax's legs, earning a kick in the side from the boy. "hey!"

jax laughed, and kicked her onto the floor. "asshole!"

"you shoved me off the couch!"

jax shrugged, and went back to watching matt damon take apart a spaceship.

charlie could hardly sit still. her mind was scrambling with something to say (it was between a long, improvised speech and just blurting it out over the movie). she let out a long breath, trying to control her breathing.

a foot nudged her. charlie looked up to jax, and shot him a small smile. "what's up?"

"you're asking me what's up? girl, you're makin' me have a panic attack by you just sitting there. what's up with you?"

charlie hesitated before getting up and pausing the movie. a few light protests came from around the room before they realized that she wasn't moving and she wasn't going to move until she said-

"i'm pansexual."

the room was silent. charlie looked around at the astonished faces of her coworkers expectantly, waiting for a reaction. "well?"

"i had a feeling," said tyler, and everybody voiced their agreement. "but, still, congrats. this takes guts."

jax got up from the couch and wrapped his arms around the smaller girl. five other bodies surrounded the pair, engulfing the shaking body of the girl who bore her soul. the room was washed pink by the sunset. the light reflected off the small tears rolling down charlie's face.

"nothing changes," teddy whispered. "you're still an incredible person. being gay doesn't change anything except your preferences."

charlie nodded, too overcome with emotion to say anything except a choked up 'thank you.' she pressed play on the remote, and mark watney was reunited with his crew. the seven stayed on the floor, covered in blankets and a tangled mess of limbs.

"thank you."
