𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐔𝐄
—𝚙𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚗𝚝 𝚍𝚊𝚢; 𝚜𝚎𝚊𝚜𝚘𝚗 𝚘𝚗𝚎—

𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐀 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍 𝐖𝐀𝐒 unique, according to her best friend; more so than any of the individuals the boy had ever met in his short lifetime, despite all of the different qualities of others that would try and rival his own opinion. And although it made Mariana special, the raven-haired girl was anything but exhilarated about the abilities that made her similar to an elite team of heroes from a time before she existed. No, she certainly wasn't born in 1989 along with those of the Umbrella Academy, nor was she known by Reginald Hargreeves — if the aging man were to find out, there was a large possibility he would come to find her. His research, as said Mariana's father, was abundant and there was no doubt in his mind that Reginald would try and recruit his daughter.

Knowing that she was capable of disastrous things made Mariana cautious around those that she loved, and taught her to control her emotions — maybe the teenager even looked at herself as less-than others, deeming the chaos she would cause if there was to be a careless mistake made. She spent her free time doing things of pure serenity, and levitated often to keep her cool when she was feeling pressured. And on the days when there was nothing else to do, Mariana would paint; sometimes it was just the night sky that she studied from the balcony while she couldn't sleep, but other times it was the drafty waters from the river near the forest. Her hours spent there were beyond count, and she always got lost in the sounds when she was near the small, tumbling waves.

Since she was a child, Mariana had limited the effects of her feelings by doing things that soothed her pounding heart, and focused on keeping her talent hidden. It proved to be difficult in the beginning, considering her parents wanted to shield her from the outside world and tell no one of her gift. But eventually, it became a routine to be calm, and the girl understood it was the only way to protect herself and her family. And then the precautions began; Mariana was homeschooled, and her father helped explore her abilities in the woods behind their home with a distance between her and the river. She was limited with friends, and had to be home by curfew if they were to go out — and even then, while she was in public, she was instructed to wear gloves.

Mariana was the girl who could bend water; who could use whatever liquid touched her skin, and destroy anything in her path with it. With the power came responsibility — her responsibility to make sure that she didn't lash out or become overly poignant so that nothing went wrong. It was important that the Carson girl was hidden away from the world, because what would happen if she ran into the wrong person? The possibilities were endless, and the risks were too high.

Up until Mariana turned sixteen, everything was perfect; no one knew of her actuality, she could focus on what was of utmost significance, and wasn't in any sort of life-threatening danger.

And then she ran into a boy called Five — the only person in the world that she couldn't control her emotions around.
