I moved to a small town just outside of Buffalo when I was in third grade. My sister, Carly, being two and a half years older than me had a better transition moving to a new town. She was going into sixth grade. Starting middle school with everyone else, she wouldn't be the only new kid. Me on the other hand. I was going into third grade. Not close enough to the beginning of elementary school to be comfortable moving. But of course being nine I had no choice. We moved into a small house down the street from the school that Carly would be going to, do it would be easier for her to watch me when I got home off the bus. Moving away was difficult because I was just far enough away that we couldn't drive out to see my old friends every weekend, not that I had many anyway. When we pulled up to our new house I saw a few kids playing outside. None of them looked my age, they all looked older. Until I saw a little boy, he was younger than me, or at least he looked like he was. Just as I noticed him, we pulled into the driveway of the house next to his. We were in the car for so long I couldn't wait to get out so as soon as the car stopped I opened the door and climbed out. Or at least tried to climb out. I had been sitting so long my legs had gone numb and I fell face first into the pavement. My parents were still in the car so thy couldn't do anything about it, but the little boy from next door came over and helped me up.
"Are you ok?" He asked me.
"I lost a tooth!" I exclaimed looking down, momentarily forgetting his question.
"I'm going to take that as a yes."
"Oh. Yeah sorry. I'm Mia."
"It's ok Mia. As long as you're ok."
"So... what's your name?"
"Oh. Right. I'm Andrew."
"It was nice to meet you Andrew, but I should help get stuff out of the car. I'll see you around, probably. What grade are you in?"
"I'm going into third."
"Me too. Maybe we'll be in the same class."
"Maybe." And with that I left him to go help get my stuff out of the car. The moving truck had just gotten there so I went to go grab a box. I was the youngest so my stuff was done first so I could go to bed first. After decorating and rebuilding was done in my room I went outside to the backyard, there was a small swing set and an in ground pool. I ran to the swings, when I heard a small voice.
"The old neighbors always used to let us swim in their pool." It was Andrew again.
"You can probably swim in our pool. At least I don't mind." He sat down on the swing next to mine.
"So where are you from."
"I'm from a small town just outside Albany." And so we started a beautiful friendship on my backyard swing set a few weeks before third grade.
