"want to read my books?" haechan offered renjun as they walked side-by-side through the school halls.
"not really," the chinese boy replied, to which haechan rolled his eyes. the two walked into their classroom, and he smiled as he caught glimpse of mark reading his notes at his desk.
"by the way," renjun lowered his voice as they sat down, "i wanted to ask you... uh, how did you find out you were... you know..."
"gay?" haechan chuckled, making the latter nod hurriedly. "i don't know... you just realise. slowly, i think. but then one day it just clicks, and suddenly everything is speeding up and you're falling head-over-heels for every boy you pass with your amateur low standards."
"sounds fun," renjun retorted, leaning closer. "so... do you have your eye on someone?"
haechan paused. "don't act like you don't know."
"so it has been mark all along," he nodded. "no wonder... how long has this been going on?"
"i can't put a beginning date to it, honestly," he replied. "i mean, i guess i've just always been infatuated with him."
"well, is he... uh, into guys?"
"i'm not sure," haechan rolled his eyes, not letting renjun's awkward wording go unnoticed, "but that doesn't mean i can't try."
"sounds like some amateur low standards," renjun chuckled to himself as haechan whacked him.
"shut up, 'jun."

"dad, what are you-"
"you don't need it, do you?" mark's father stopped to look at him with a raised brow, and he couldn't fight against that gaze.
"no, no i don't," he eventually muttered as his father proceeded to throw haechan's second book in the bin.
"you should tell him to stop giving you these," his dad continued, brushing his hands off. "waste of paper and all."
"why would i discourage him like that?" mark huffed under his breath, side-glancing his grandpa, who sat in the living room near the window in a rocking chair. he was reading the newspaper, but mark knew he was listening.
fed up with the men in his house, he stood up with an audible sigh and headed for the stairs, not before his father stopped him once again.
"i'm going to leave the books next to the back gate," his dad informed him. "don't forget to throw them out before the bin collection next week."
mark ignored him and continued up, wanting no more than to avoid his problems.
