a week. one whole week had passed since mark had been to school.
haechan cried every night.
he cried long and hard, because mark was so close yet so far away. he couldn't even smile for renjun, who now spent his lunch breaks quietly comforting the boy.
renjun didn't mind sacrificing his break for his heartbroken friend. he tried not to think about why.
haechan didn't want to do anything anymore. he was at an all-time low; the days passed by, futile and unnoticed, as he spent them staring blankly at walls and having no motivation to move. everything seemed pointless. he didn't want to think. nothing was appealing. life wasn't worth it when he lost all purpose.
haechan had never experienced this kind of emptiness before, but it was sickening. it was a horrible abyss which he couldn't escape, but the consequences of his own actions threw him into it. it was his fault he was like this.
but if he was like this, he couldn't even bear to imagine what mark was going through.
all he prayed for was that mark was still in his neighbourhood. that was all he wanted, because mark's father was the type to send him away to boarding school for not getting home at a curfew of ten p.m..
he missed mark so much. haechan would do anything just to see him once more. just to feel him. see that heart-melting smile. touch those firm arms which would wrap around him and make him feel infinite.
but things went from bad to worse. haechan did see mark again, blending into the school hallways on a bright monday morning.
he looked so familiar, so nostalgic that haechan almost felt sick. he felt his throat start to choke up, but he couldn't cry now.
mark didn't even acknowledge him. he didn't even look in his direction. it seemed almost impossible to have missed haechan, so as he walked straight past him to greet one of his classmates, haechan really did start to cry.
he saw the concealer. mark was never good with make-up.
haechan ran straight to the bathrooms. renjun saw him, and renjun saw mark. he strode up to the boy, but again, he tried avoiding him.
"mark lee," he called out boldly, causing the said boy to turn.
"i need to get to roll call, renjun. what's wrong?"
"is he just a joke to you?" he didn't realise how his voice raised, but it definitely caught attention. mark pursed his lips.
"who?"
"should i spell it out for you?"
"go ahead."
renjun looked at the few people who stared at him, before scoffing. "i'm protecting him because i care about him. don't you dare go near him again."
mark clenched his jaw as renjun walked off, before calling out, "i still don't know what you're on about."
but the chinese boy didn't even falter, so mark stormed into his classroom.
