- "So,tomorrow is your fifteenth, huh ?",asked the boy sitting opposite me.
- "Yeah, I guess.", I answered, taking another bite of my hamburger.
- "You don't seem enthusiastic. C'mon, tomorrow's your big day, smile!"I looked at him from across the table, swallowing.
- " C'mon Ned. It's not like I'll get a good one. My dad has a rabbit. My whole family's familiars are passive. Heck, even my grandparents have weak familiars.
- "Yeah, but you can always hope.", he said, practically inhaling his soda.I should explain. Familiars are magic creatures, summoned by the user. Everyone gets one at the age of 15, precisely at the moment of their birth. No one can explain it, and scientists have given up on finding out. I got up to leave, picking up my overly-heavy backpack and swinging it over my shoulder.
- "I'll text you on whether I get a chipmunk or a mouse."
- "Well, at least your humor is intact. See ya on Monday."———————————————————
May, Sunday 18th, 18:36. My familiar would appear in about 3 minutes.
I had gone out into the forest behind my home to spare myself from the looks of my family as the saw my familiar's a cricket.
We'd already finished my birthday dinner and I wanted some fresh air. I checked my watch.
2 minutes.
I tried not to think of what my classmates would say : "Seriously, a shrew ?"
Most of them had cool animals, like a greyhound, or a hawk. I heard Thomas from Class B had a wolf.
1 minute.
I'd even settle for a house cat. Those were at least cute. Most people had something of the sort, so I would at least be average.

Nothing.
My familiar was probably so small and pathetic and weak i couldn't even notice it.
I tried not to cry. I knew this would probably happen, but that didn't stop my from dropping to my knees and quietly sobbing to myself like a baby.
Then, I heard a branch behind me crack. I looked over my shoulder and .....

I don't think any words describe it better than : HOLY CRAP
It's black, blue, silver and platinum scales gleamed in the setting afternoon sun. It's wicked, black, talons glinted like obsidian. The creatures 15-meter-long body stood in the trees behind me, right where the forest met the clearing. It's bat-like wings folded and unfolded as it came closer to me, quieter than it should have been able to at its size. Beautiful kaleidoscopic blue eyes looked at me from it's arrowhead-shaped head. A finned tail, ending with a crescent moon.
My familiar was a FREAKING DRAGON.
It regarded me with it's intelligent opal eyes, tilting its head as if asking, "Why are you crying?"
