I watched Rick as he chopped Jesse's hand off of Carl's. Ron aimed a gun at a Rick when Michonne sobbed through Ron. As he fell, he pulled the trigger. Carl turned around and looked up at us. "Dad?" He said, before falling onto the ground. Rick scooped him up bridal style and an him to the infirmary while Michonne and I used our katanas to clear a path to it.
The door swung open and Rick put Carl on a gurney. I dropped my katana and started pacing as Michonne took the sheet covered with walker guts off of me. Michonne picked up my katana and put it on the counter while I sat on the ground in a corner with my knees tucked to my chest, rocking back and forth. I silently cried, my breathing uneven. After Denise knew Carl would be fine without her for a few minutes, she came over to me. She crouched down and put her hand on my back. "Breathe. You need to breathe. Shhh, it's okay, just breathe. Focus on your breathing." She told me slowly and calmly. I got it somewhat under control, but I couldn't stop rocking and my breathing was still uneven. My tears had become less frequent, and Carl was moved to his own room. When Tara got back, she and Michonne helped me get to Carl when people were allowed to see him. It was about two days before Denise let us in. I hadn't moved or slept. I just rocked and cried.
I stood up slowly, with the help of Michonne and Tara, they helped me walk to Carl's room. They allowed me to lay in bed with him. I got under the covers and curled up next to him, laying my head on his chest. I listened to his heart like I usually do, and the feeling of his chest going up and down calmed me enough to let me drift to sleep.
I was awoken by Michonne and Tara again. They helped me sit up and they gave me a bottle of water and a few crackers to start off with. They stood me up and changed me into a clean pair of pj shorts and a clean tank top. Tara brushed my hair and put it into a braid. Tara left as I got under the covers with Carl, and rested my head on his chest again. I put one of my arms across his abdomen and I slowly felt and arm wrap around my back. I looked up to see Carl looking at me, he could barely keep his eye open. "Hi." He mumbled out with all he had. "Hi. You don't have to say anything, just get some rest." I told him. He had that beautiful smile on his face. Not the one with teeth, just his lips. I put my head back into the position it was previously in, and drifted off to sleep again.
Denise woke me up to tell me that I had to use the bathroom or I would pee on the sheets. I grumbled and she helped me walk to the bathroom. While I was using the bathroom, she was talking to the group about my well being, which wasn't very good.
-Denise's POV-
Tara, Michonne, Rick, Daryl, Carol, Rosita, Sasha, Maggie, Glenn, a few others, and I, met up at the infirmary to discuss Skylar.
"She rarely ever leaves Carl's side. She won't really eat or drink anything, all she does is sleep. I'm getting worried. He's only injured, he's not dead. When he dies in the far future, she won't do anything. She won't have a Carl to curl up next to. What's gonna happen to her? What our plan?" I said. "We have to figure out a way for her to get back on schedule. We need to start off with waking her up regularly to eat and use the bathroom. Hopefully she will learn to stay awake when she needs to and be asleep on a regular schedule. From there we can try and get her to leave the infirmary." Rick explained to us. Carol and Maggie would make food, Tara, Michonne, and I would take care of her, and the others would try and get her out of the house and wake her up. This would be an interesting experience for all of us.-Skylar's POV-
I got out of the bathroom and Denise brought in a wheel chair. "Where are we going?" I asked. "I need to check your ankle. I know you hurt it a while back." She explained. I got in the chair and she took me to a gurney. I hopped up and she examined my ankle. "You broke it. How have you gone a week without telling anyone or doing anything about a broken ankle?"
"I was raised in a house full of teenage boys. I played volleyball, basketball, softball, football, and soccer for as long as I can remember. I have a high pain tolerance. It only felt like a sprain anyways." I told her as she put a boot on my foot. "You need to stay off that foot, but also get out of bed every once in a while okay?" I nodded, and got back in the chair when she finished. She rolled me back to Carl's room and helped me in bed. "I'll check on you in a bit, okay?" I nodded and she left.
"What happened to your foot?" Carl asked in a hoarse voice. "Apparently I broke it a while back." I told him as I put my head on his chest again. He put his arm around me again. "It was when you tripped out in the woods, wasn't it?" "Probably, but you know I don't pay any attention to my injuries." He chuckled lightly. I smiled and went back to sleep.
I was woken up by Maggie. "I brought you some food. Carol made it just for you." She told me. I smiled and looked at Carl. He was sleeping. I put my attention back on Maggie. "Thank you." I told her. She handed me a plate of mashed potatoes, green beans, and chicken. She handed me a fork and a bottle of water. I ate half of everything and had half of the water. "Maybe we can save the rest for Carl for when he wakes up." I suggested. She gave me a nod. Glenn walked in. "It's time to change shifts." He told her. She looked at me. "Go, I'll be fine." "Okay, make sure you drink plenty of water Skye." She reminded me as she walked out. I went back to how I was and went back to sleep. I woke up to Carl moving. I sat up and helped Carl sit up as well. I know he didn't really need help because he got shot in the eye, but he still doesn't have much energy.
I noticed Rick sitting in the chair next to the bed. He was holding a few comic books and novels. "I brought you guys some things to read. I hope you don't mind." He said, handing Carl the comics and handing me the novels. He stuck around and we talked a bit before he left. I read about one chapter before falling asleep.
-Carl's POV-
Skye fell asleep again. All she does is sleep now. I can't figure out why. When Denise came in to check on me, I told her to get the group together so we could talk about Skylar.
We met up in main area of the infirmary and started a meeting. "As much as I love her, she's sleeping too much. She needs to get out of the infirmary and go outside. As much as I want to spend time alone with her, I don't want her to sleep this much. A couple hours of sleeping in is okay, but sleeping every second of the day is really bad for her. Does anyone know why she's like this?" I said.
"She's lost everyone. Her brother was murdered right in front of her when she was younger. Maybe all of the lack of sleep she's had since she was younger is finally catching up to her." Carol suggested. "She could just be really depressed. June is on it's way. That's gotta be hard for her." Maggie stated. "It could just be a sleeping disorder we never knew about until now. I think we should just observe her and see what happens. We should stick to our plan before and move Carl back home this week." Denise announced. We nodded and went our own ways.
-Skylar's POV-
I woke up and went into the bathroom on my own. When I got back to the bed, I noticed Carl wasn't there. My breathing became uncontrolled. My yes searched the room for him. I started on my way to the main infirmary when the door opened and Carl was there. I let out a breath. "You can't just scare me like that." I told him.
-Weeks Later-
My sleeping schedule was still wonky, but I could stay awake for most of the day.
