3 months later

"Liz! Liz get back here!" Mom yelled at the girl. "Don't you dare leave this house - or so help me angels above -"

"What mom? You'll ground me again? I've been grounded for the past two months dammit! I'm sick of this god damned house!" Liz screamed back before slamming the door firmly behind her.

I sighed and stood up from where I was sat at the top of the stairs, descending down them and placing a reassuring hand on Mom's shoulder before slipping on my shoes and going after my sister. I had no plans to bring her back. Just to calm her before sending her on her way to wherever she was going.

"Leave me alone Charlie." She ordered, continuing forward with strong strides and refusing to look at me with her fiery eyes.

"I could. But I don't think it's what I want to do." I shrugged, contrasting her fury walk with less agressive steps. "Mom's upset. She can't help herself sometimes." I defended.

"Upset isn't an excuse to treat your kids like shit." She counteracted, a bitterness to her tone.

"No it isn't. But she's mom and sometimes you have to cut eacother some slack to move on."

"How can I cut her some slack when all she does is mope around all day? Really Charlie - when was the last time she asked about Carson? That's right! She doesn't care! What she does care about is pissing me off to the pits of hell!"

"That's not true. She does care."

"She doesn't Charlie. Don't kid yourself - soon enough she'll turn on you. Just watch."

I sucked in a breath before stopping her in her tracks.

"Sure. Maybe she will - but if you don't put an effort to meet in the middle it won't be a maybe. Will it?" She said nothing. "Look I don't want to fight over anything. Not with you. Not with Mom. I'm not even here to stop you Liz."

"Then why did you follow me?"

"Because I want you and Mom not to hate eachother. You two were always close. Why are you always at eachother's throats now?"

"I don't hate her Charlie. But to just drop everything to fall into the same pit as her? I won't do it. I tried to keep it up but I can't. Not anymore."

"Then what is it you want to do?" I asked, drinking in the sincerity in her gaze.

"Honestly? I want to get out. Live a life away from here." Was her answer.

I nodded, pondering for a moment.

"You can, Liz. You just have to stick it a while longer. You'll be 18 in less than three months. Just... stick it until then. Please."

Liz nodded slightly at first. Then looked to the sky and blinked a few times before shaking her head and walking away, leaving me uncertain as to whether my advice was any good.

Either way, I could do nothing but hope.
