The carriage ride home had been silent. Nobody dared to break the consistent tension that was so close to snapping. I didn't miss the subtle looks my way though, or how Lucian would avoid rubbing the red marks around his wrists from the chains. Convinced it would set me off into the frenzy that had occured.
Ray and Lucy were the only ones to sit comfortably, having only heard whispers of what had happened. There was something innocent about what our minds conjured to what our eyes actually saw.
I would give so much to turn back time, to erase what my eyes had seen and my heart had felt.
But that was the cruelty of life, even for Immortality. We watch our mistakes and live with more regrets. A painful curse that has always been brushed away by the gift that is eternal life.
Now the night was beginning to close in to the early hours of the morning, exhaustion began to finally seep into my mind. I barely acknowledged the carriage halt outside the city house, barely registered myself moving to the door and up the stairs that led to the maze of hallways.
Everything was silent..even the candles seemed to slow their flickers as the wax's life had nearly ended. I opened the door to my room and walked over to the framed bed.
I brought my hand to my weapons, unsheathing them and gently placing them on the table with as little thought as it took to breathe.
"Still sleeping with them I see." A voice murmured behind me.
I whirled to face the voice and saw his green eyes peer from the shadows, his posture tall even as he sat in the chair beside the fireplace, "You are as much my bloodline as I had hoped Allie.."
My voice faltered, "I am nothing like you. I do not betray my family." I snapped back, taking pleasure in his subtle flinch to my words.
"Listen to me Almira, what I have done has been for the protection of my...our bloodline." He gestures to the other chair, "Sit. I know you are angry and require answers, so I shall give them."
I stood there for a few moments more, my exhaustion drowning the anger as I reluctantly grabbed a knife and moved to the chair, "Once I have my answers, you will remove yourself from my sight."
He swallows but nods, "I suppose Lucian has told you of the Immortal Bloodline's History?"
I merely nod as he gave a brief smile, "Good. Then you'll know that Genevieve's bloodlines possesses no abilities. Neither did Joseph's at the time, but it was only when Genevieve took her own life out of madness that the Angels finally realised Joseph was not just stronger, but ready for what they could offer him and his bloodline."
He pauses, a flicker of hesitation in his words before a part of him wins over and continues, "Joseph was given the blood of one of the Angels, the Angel's name is one we do not know. All we know is that it was powerful enough to allow Joseph and those he turned to possess abilities of power. Joseph only bore three sons in his life, this bloodline became the pure-bloods, their abilities one of unimaginable power."
"The Order hunt these pure-bloods, however few because they are what is left of Joseph's blood. The bloodline have not been seen in centuries because they wait for the day the Angels envisioned."
His eyes lock on mine, "They've been waiting for you Almira. Not just Lucian, Lucy, Ray and myself....all of us. We've been waiting for the final dial in our compass."
I blink, "If this is some kind of trick..."
"I would never lie about this." He replies sharply, his eyes haunted.
"But...why? What are you talking about?!" I snap, unsure if I wanted the answers after all.
"Isn't it obvious? My association for the Order is merely a disguise they have not yet figured out. Why is it I was able to train you as I did? Why is your ability that of a fighter?"
He leans forward and takes my hand cautiously, "You are a pure-blood, Joseph's Grand-daughter and my own."
I go to speak but merely sound bubbles from my throat in what can be described as confusion and shock. After a few moments I part my lips, "How is any of this real? Why do you even need me if you could fight this war?"
"Because my Allie, you are the final piece to the puzzle. The last obstacle. You have been bred for this war ever since you inhaled your first breath."
