Today was a day of fresh starts and new beginnings. It was Monday; the first work day of the week, and I happened to be starting a brand new job.
It was a tad different than other things I've done. I had lots of secretary experience, but I'd never been a personal assistant before. Let alone a personal assistant to the biggest CEO in the city.
The company's current project was rebuilding the bridge that connected the town I lived in to the busiest part of the city. Which just so happened to be where the CEO's office was located. I was definitely nervous, but I hoped that spending more time in the city might bring me out of my shell a bit more.
As I drove across the old bridge, I occasionally glanced out the window to see the new one being built beside me. But there wasn't much to look at yet. It was probably going to take years before it would be completed.
Once I finally got over the bridge, it only took me five minutes to get to the office tower. It was slightly intimidating walking from my car to the entrance, knowing that my boss could be up there somewhere, watching me. I probably looked like an ant.
I slipped inside the building behind someone else and began to make my way over to the front desk. The tap of my heels against the marble floor was enough to alert everyone in the lobby, including the woman from behind the desk. Before I was even halfway there she asked, "Can I help you?"
"Uhm, yes. My name is Sydney Talbot, I'm Mr. Flynn's new assistant...?"
The woman's face suddenly lit up. "Ah, Ms. Talbot! You can go ahead on up to the twenty-sixth floor, I'll buzz Mr. Flynn and let him know you're on your way."
I thanked her, hurried to the elevator, and pressed the button for the twenty-sixth floor. As the elevator began to rise, so did my nerves.
This was going to be my first time meeting Mr. Flynn. Even during the interview process, I was interviewed by someone from a different department. I hoped I would make a good first impression.
Then my heart skipped a beat. The elevator stopped, it's doors slid open, and I stepped out.
"Ms. Talbot," A warm voice greeted me. "Please, come in."
I stepped inside and looked around for the source of the voice. The office was large but very neat. Towards the right there was a large desk and on the left there were bookshelves and filing cabinets, along with a coffee machine. A man was stood in front of it, pouring himself what looked to be just a cup of hot water. He ripped open a small packet and began dunking a tea bag into his cup before turning around to face me.
I could almost feel my face heat up.
Mr. Flynn was a slender young man, five or so inches taller than me (I'm 5'4", respectively), with short light brown hair and the most piercing blue eyes I'd ever seen. He was nothing short of handsome, that is for sure.
I watched as he carefully carried his full cup of tea to his desk, then motioned for me to sit in the chair across from him.
"Ms Talbot, I must say I've never had a personal assistant before. The company is expanding and taking on more projects than we ever have before. So, I decided to find a suitable individual that can help me stay organized and on track."
"From the looks of your office, you're very good at staying organized," I replied. "But I appreciate your trust in my skills and I intend to do my best and help with whatever you need."
Mr. Flynn smiled. "Well, there isn't much for you to do today, except for a bit of filing. I'm going to get you a small office set up over by the cabinets and I'll have your weekly schedule by tomorrow."
He pushed his mug aside and slid a large stack of papers towards me. "All of these go in those filing cabinets. No rush. Also, the restroom is hidden over in the corner by the coffee machine, which you're free to help yourself to at any time."
"Thank you so much! I'll have the filing done by lunch."
-
Lunch had come and gone. The filing that I was supposed to do had been done hours ago, and Mr. Flynn even gave me a tour of the building. I didn't visit each floor, but I knew where the different departments were and how to get there when I needed to.
Since I had nothing else to do, he gave me the OK to go home for the day. Three hours before I was even supposed to. I hesitated at first, but he insisted that I could and that there'd probably be a lot more days like this, so I did. I could already tell working at this company was going to be a nice change of pace from what I was used to in my life.
Once I arrived home, I tossed my keys on the kitchen counter and reheated some leftover Chinese for my dinner. My small grey terrier, named Noodle, hopped up on my bed with me and we spent the rest of the evening watching TV until we fell asleep.
