The majority of topics covered in this book are not hard rules designed for you to rigidly follow, but are topics you need to think about as a leader. Pick and choose what you find beneficial in this book, and then, tailor the techniques to fit your personal leadership style.
There are a few other key take-aways I think are important. The first point is you need the skill and knowledge to educate and train yourself to become a better leader. Always keep improving and don't be afraid to pick up a few new techniques along your career path. Keep the fundamental rules in mind, such as take charge when in charge. Know your job. Train and trust your people. Keep the board members happy while taking care of your people.
With your individual effort and motivation to improve your leadership skills you will become a great leader. Being a great leader is one of the best and most rewarding experiences you will ever have in your life. I promise.
The one thing I take the most pride in is, during all of my years as a leader in the military: I never lost a soldier. A combination of pure luck, extraordinary people, training, maintenance, and safety programs combined with more good fortune, kept everyone safe. I always brought my troops completely unharmed back home to their waiting loved ones. As a parent and husband, I believe this is my biggest leadership accomplishment during my twenty years of service to my nation.
Use your leadership to do good. Use your leadership to improve the lives of those you lead.
Never be afraid to try something new.
Be hard when needed. Go Machiavelli when necessary to protect your business and your people.
Neverforget. Leaders do one thing: They lead.
