Ben sat bit his nails in the principal's office. There was nothing anyone could do to stem the wave of panic. Parents were already calling in wanting to pull out their children and demanding answers. Classes had been suspended and everyone sent to their dorms. He knew there was another grand meeting on the horizon and it wouldn't deem anything good. Mal had also been called to the office along with the other VKs but only Evie and Carlos showed. His mind overflowed with memories of them being together. A future with Mal shattered by one mistake.
"Why didn't you tell us?" Carlos asked, "I get not making a public announcement. But you know that Maleficent would have us on her hit list. Is this the way to treat us as heroes?"
Ben looked ready to start crying. He turned to Evie who was hugging herself. "I'm sorry."
The Fairy Godmother walked in with Jane behind her. "My daughter refuses to go back to the dorms. Apparently, she wants answers like the rest of us."
Jane grabbed a chair and planted herself next to Carlos. Giving him a one-armed hug. After giving Ben a glare, she stared straight ahead.
"Good afternoon all of you. I guess that the news of Maleficent's escape is known. Me being among those recently informed," the principal sighed, "does anyone know where Mal and Jay are? I was hoping to have all of you here for this talk."
"I'll look out for her," Evie offered in a small voice.
"Thank you, Carlos do you know where Jay is?"
Carlos shrugged. "He hasn't been to any of our classes today," he refused to look directly at her.
Fairy Godmother sat down. "I will start by saying this is an awful time for Auradon. Maleficent's defeat was such a relief for many. Now that's she's free, I can't imagine how terrified everyone is," she said, "but there's also the fact that this panic was forced upon us by a misguided young lady and warped politics. I'm certain you meant well Ben but this decision wasn't a wise one."
"Of course," Ben stared at his feet, "this is all my fault, the kingdom, Mal, I'll never be forgiven." He didn't even fight the tears that fell. It would only be a matter of time before everyone found out about Jordan. After that, no one would trust him again as their king.
"It's a hard lesson, realizing you hurt others to save yourself," Jane said.
"Jane, that's not a nice thing to say," Fairy Godmother gasped, "Ben made a mistake, he's still young and the advisors also have a part in this."
"I think we're being too hard on him," Evie spoke up, "Ben's always been there. He got us off the Isle. We owe him a chance to make things right," she turned to the young ruler, "I forgive you."
Ben's tear-streaked face looked up in gratitude. "Do you mean that?"
Evie nodded and hugged him. "Just make sure that no one's pulling your strings," she whispered in his ear, "be your own king."
"What are we here for again?" Carlos refused to look at Ben, "you wanted all VKs together."
"That would be because of me," Advisor Ray stood at the doorway, "two are still at large?"
"Excuse me," Fairy Godmother cut in, "they are teens, not criminals. Jay's having a tough time adjusting to bad news and now Mal is in a similar situation."
"Mal caused panic and will be punished accordingly. But I'm happy to see two VKs co-operating," Advisor Ray walked up, "how has your day been, children?"
"We're fine," Chad said after seeing Evie sniffle several times, "what do you want from us?"
"You've already done it by being obedient. I have a friend you both will meet later," Advisor Ray stated, "please convince your wayward friends to get with the program. With Maleficent on the loose, we have to be a cohesive unit."
